Post Seminole Bateau Floor repair advice
I just bought this boat last week.

This is a 2006 fiberglass hull. The bottom and the stringers are in great shape. However the screwed in subfloor above the stringers has water intrusion and the result is a soft sub floor.

Here is the underside of the sub floor after removing it.

Sub floor removed

Subfloor cleaned up

I am NOT a fiberglass guy. I had 2 thought on replacing the subfloor. Use Composite decking boards from Home Depot and then cover them with Hydroturf.

Or go back with 1/2 Pressure Treated plywood and put 3-4 coats of Epoxy Resin on it. Then cover it with Hydroturf.

What say you?

Out of those two options, I'd go the plywood route over the deck boards. The will be little grooves on the deck boards that might be kind of weird to deal with.

If you have a sign shop around you, you could go with alucobond doubled up, then turf over that. It would last forever. These are composite sheets with two really thin aluminum veneers. Make a template out of cardboard and cut away.

Are you still in Bainbridge? I'm not far from you (Leesburg) and I have a source for the alucobond panels, they are $75 for a 4'X8'X3mm sheet. I think I bought a sunfish sailboat from you years ago to turn into a layout boat when I still lived in Tallahassee.

I would caution against plywood with just the resin on it.

I have seen that before and it doesn't end well.

If the plywood is fiberglassed in that is one thing, but when you just do the resin invariable you will still get water in there and the resin will not allow it to dry out properly and you will get rot faster that way.

If you want to go the plywood route, I would just use the PT/Marine grade plywood and then paint it. Paint all sides (including edges) though because you will probable have water/moisture underneath it as well. Then just try to keep a good coat of paint on it...

Otherwise, I would fully fiberglass the plywood in using the correct fiberglass for a floor installation.

Not a figerglass guy either so can't help you with that, but just had experience with the other....

I like the idea of some sort of a composite material. Just be careful how you attach/fasten as screw holes create opportunities for water to get in (with plywood as well if you go that route)

Well not many pictures were taken but its done.

Got 4-5 coats of epoxy resin on the plywood including all the edges.

Hydroturf installed. Looks like a new boat.

I’m now working on a 2nd boat with the same issue.

Got the floor cut out of it. Now to drop in a new floor.

I see you got one of these for sale, you gonna keep one? Did anybody take over Paul's place in Bainbridge?

Sorry that I’m just reading this thread. But, proper way would be to sand the sides and basically “laminate” the floor to the sides with fiberglass matting. Screw the floorboards into the stringers. Epoxy fill all gaps. Start by glassing/matting (thin matting or fabric) where the floor meets sides. Then layer that corner, alternating bottom and sides overlapping. Then, final tie-in across the floor with heavy matting.

Boat builders didn’t start using green wood for flooring until around 2008. From there FG floors started holding up much better.
