Post subject:  Go Devil 1644 Spray Rail question

Does anyone have a 1644 GD with spray rails? I took mine to the river for the first time with a 23hp hypersport. It did well but the back rode a little low for me when on plane. I will be painting the boat soon and am thinking about adding spray rails before painting. I am trying to find where GD puts them from the factory and going to copy. Thanks

I had the same boat and added wedges and it made a world of difference. I know some folks on here are anti-wedge, but they work well for some boats. And from what I've heard and read, the GD 16x44 is one that benefits from them when running a surface drive motor on it.

I read several old posts about wedges. Had never heard of them before. What size would you recommend to start with? I think I'm going to add spray rails also, but am definitely going to try the wedges. Thanks

Thats what I am looking to do. Could you measure how far down it is from gunnel. It looks to be parallel the whole way.

Glider,

I don't have that boat any more and don't remember the exact measurements on the wedges, but I think they were like 4" wide x maybe 5" long. And they were about 1/2" tall. Most people say start with 1/2" or so and then just grind them down to what works. Mine did the job perfectly and I never had to do anything to them. I may go fishing next week with the guy that bought my old boat. If I do, I'll measure them for you.

There is a pic in this thread of the wedges I believe they are referring to. Kinda like trim tabs is what it looks like.

Glider......from the top of the gunnel it is 9 inches to the peak of the sprayrail. it's the same measurement the length of the boat.

Thank you to everyone. I just dropped the boat off at the shop. They are adding two wedges and spray rails should be finished tomorrow afternoon. I love it when a plan comes together.

OK, here's the results. Probably will be a while before I get to test. I am going to paint before I take it out again.

Yea, the picture is a little deceiving because of the ground off paint for welding. It is the same size as the crimp on my Gatortrax, but if it does fly that will be fine with me. Then i'll tell everyone I have the fastest hull in the other topic.

How do the wedges on the bottom keep it from porposing ?,As I have a problem with my 16/48 with 35 GDSD porposing when im by myself. If someone is up towards the bow,or I have it loaded with my gear it dont do it .

Oh by the way, Glider, have you had a chance to run it yet? I'd like to know if the wedges did what you needed them to?

How big are the wedges, and how should they be positioned ? I have the same hull ,and I need to do something to keep it from porposing, and riding so low in the the stern.

Post subject:  Re: Go Devil 1644 Spray Rail question

I'm thinking about adding spray rails as well on my custom 16X44 rounded chim haul. I was following this post but was curious as to what the end result was. I would hate to grind the paint off the side of my boat and pay to have spray rails added on if the performance sucks. Glider, get back at me and let me know how you made out.

Thanks,
