I went to the Louisiana sportsman show and had a visit with the guy's .

In their booth they got this rig that looks just like mine! Its got a hard blind that bolts on and my pad built into the bottom of the boat.

I had talked to them about building it, and even drew them some pictures.
I gave the job to my boy in Chalmette because he was trying to get going again after Katrina and did not think nothing else about it.

Boy am I pissed!!!! I don't mind them using my idea, they just did it better than my guy. Their boat is lighter and runs faster than mine.

My rig is bigger and my stage 3 GDSD would do 31 on a good day, they have hit 37 with their big motor.

They like the way the pad works.

If you want to push pole after red fish , or want a boat that won't slide as bad as most of the rigs do, and want to put either a hard blind or pop up on your rig ask for "JD's Performance Hull"

Remind them to send my royalty Check.

I happy they thought enough of my rig to reproduce it. When someone tells me they like my rig ,I got some one to send them to.

The pad on the bottom of the boat works real well.

They had 3 boats there that were make like that. It caught my eye as I was walking by. It is an interesting design, looks like alot of bending, but very cool.

The bending is easy with the right break. It stiffins the bottom so bending the the rake in is a little harder, I was there when they did mine.

not having pictures or a description of this pad you're talking about makes this thread pretty much worthless.

Maybe one of the GT guys can chime in or post a pic. I will try to describe it best i can. At the edges of the bottom, where the sides would normally turn upward, there was a step put in. Roughly 4 inches or so from the edge of the boat, the bends went up about the same height, maybe less, then turned flat again parallel with the bottom of the boat, once again for about the same distance, then the actual turn for the side was made. It was kind of an offset in the flat surface of the bottom, but i would call it a step similar to that of a fiberglass boat. Basically looked like a square was cut out of the outer edge of the bottom.

Something like this. Rudimentary as the drawing may seem, you get the picture.

What the pad does is create a different ground plane effect in the center of the boat then at the chine. The lower a airplane fly the more lift it gets, the shallower the water the more lift a boat gets the faster it runs. If you run fast enough to get up on just the pad it will pick up more speed. I had a 20 foot reno skiff with a 65hp out board, it was good for 40 with out a pad, I put in a tunnel and a16" wide pad and picked up 15 mph for a top end of 53mph. I did not think I could get a mudboat going fast enough to run just on the pad (they are getting close). When I was playing with long tails every time I got stuck it was because mud came up the side. Putting the pad on and a trick chine did help, the I put Teflon on the bottom. That sob would run through some shit and was real fast for a long tail.

Tuning the pad could help get that boat up on just the pad. I made mine 48" wide and 2" high, I would build the next one 42 x 2.5. In a racing hull the pads are only 15"-18" wide and 2'' tall they run a lot more hp.

I did not know the boat had been out for a while, its nice to see it get good reviews.

If you sight fish for reds or bowfish and pole the boat, you will love the pad it tracks a lot straighter in the wind.

They did a real good job on the hull, they got to get the name right JD's extreme performance by GTR
has a nice ring

There really just built in spray rails imo, The concept is the same, to try and get as much lift as you can when taking off and then reduce the drag as you pick up speed. The faster you go the greater the lift, but heres the trick and where speed, HP and your homework come into play, If its done correctly you can get the water to break free from the step/rail and its like switching from a 52" bottom to a 44" bottom, 8" of bottom surface area (drag) gone. Less drag = more speed. Also the step/rails tend to act as skies riding the surface on aerated water.

I like the design,

What I would like to see next is for someone to try to get more air under the boat by dropping back down on the chine to match the depth of the pad. While this still will give you the desired lift, it will also channel air through out the entire lenth of the step. reducing drag even more.

Delta mentioned that the 2x2 angle welded in was a cheap version. I've been contemplating this for a little while now. Could you retrofit existing boats with this chine and smaller bottom profile? Basically weld 2x2's to the bottom of an existing boat, then put another bottom on it but just not as wide, like 6 inches less. It would give you the step chine for turning, a smaller running pad like BB talked about and you could do it without affecting the inside layout of the boat. I noticed that the Extreme hulls have the cross braces on top of the floor but a retrofitted boat would not.

Obviously this would not be as good as the original, but it could help the handling on some boats. Now it could change the way the boat rides, meaning more transom lift or front-end plowing but I think that would be determined by how the rake was done. You could do it with 1x2's instead of 2x2's which would make the change less dramatic. The chine would be less pronounced and would probably not help with turning as much. I'm also not sure how much weight this would add.

It would also give the guys with a lot dents in their bottom a fresh new start without building a whole new boat. Maybe you could even fit flotation (marine quality closed cell foam, if there is such a thing) between the runners to either add more or as a retrofit. Just something I've been thinking about and was wondering if it was possible.

This is a stepped hull

To me what a GTB xtreme hull has is stepped chine.

Tomato.......tamoto! it all depends on which way the boats going!
