Post Sherwin Williams KEM-400
I know alot of guys on here are recommending that to use. Of course, the dbag at the Sherwin Williams store is telling me it wont work. I'm thinking that of course no paint company wants to guarantee a product in the water. I went back and searched. This is what several of the big boat companies are using right?

Looked at the duralux, but it doesnt come in different colors and am wanting to do natgear.

Just looking for a confirmation.

Thanks

Duralux has a Yellow primer that you can buy.. Follow these steps and you cant go wrong.

Wash ya boat GOOD !!!! Go to car wash and use engine cleaner (degreaser)
Spray your boat with ALumabright. let it sit for 30 minutes are so.. Rinse.
Once Dry, roll or spray on the Yellow Aluminum Primer that duralux makes. Probaly 2 coats. maybe more if spraying.
After the yellow primer is dry, you can paint it with what ever oil base paint you want. it aint coming off.

Were are you from?

If Louisiana, Shannons Hardware has the Duralux Paints. In Fact, you can even pick one of there many colors. May be better to use the same brand paint as primmer. Though, I was told by the Duralux rep., that it didnt matter.

Call Lou @ LSB for your paint. He has NG colors ready to roll and its PPG paint so it holds up great.

I just bought a gallon of that paint from sw. I explainded that gtrax used their paint and that I wanted the cobblestone color that kent uses on their natgear paint. The guy said tjey call it duckboat brown. He had to order it out of littlerock but I hadit in a few days. Around 50 bucks. He said since it's a production paint that's it's tackfree in about 10 minutes.

I think that's the stuff we use at work to paint hydraulc cyliinders. Holds up well if prepped well

do not know about kem-400 but i have used dura-plate 235 by sherwin williams befroe , shipyards use it on allminum crewboats, an it is a epoxy primer so its flat no shine.

Here is the deal on KEM-400 by Sherwin. You need to get it from a Chemical Coatings store - NOT your neighborhood Sherwin-Williams store. CC stores are found in major metro areas. When the store blends it up for you make sure they knock the sheen down to 2-5% reflectance. They can do this with additives at the time of mixing. If you do not get this done, the paint will not be flat, as KEM-400 straight out of the can is glossy. I have a gallon of the "Gator Boat Brown", the custom color that Gator Trax uses for their boats. Although the name would imply brown, this is actually an o.d. color that will not end up looking "kermit the frog" green like some o.d. green paints on the market.

KEM-400 sprays easily through an HVLP gun, dries quickly and wears like iron. Like any topcoat, it performs best over a properly prepped and primed boat.

There are a lot of good boat paints out there, but for me you can't beat KEM-400.

but if you dont have a CC store near you just check with your local SW store. Perhaps they will order it for you eeven though they do not have it in house.

The KEM-400 works great. I have painted a few boats with it and the last couple of years and they still look good!!

Bringing an old post to the top. Do the same techniques work for already painted boats? Need to repaint the GD hull I just bought. OD paint that is on it is badly faded and looks like crap.
