Post Prop IQ - mine = low
OK, I've done a bit of lurking on here, looking at 2 blade vs. 3 blade, pitch, load, etc........and to be honest, all I've learned is that most seem to agree 2 blade in mud and vegitation, 3 blade in deep water with a load. I am running a MB with a Kohler 40, and with a worn blade or the brand new one (MB Big Blade), my rpms and speed were close to the same, about 1-2 mph more with the new, EXCEPT when i have the bowfishing gear on. I guess the excess weight in the nose makes it plow and lose lots of MPH. I had a new BB, the broke it about 3 hours into it's life, so I put the old one back on. The other day, with full bowfishing load, I was getting 10.1 at 4100 RPM (wide open for my motor). Still getting about 21 with single man hunting load. This engine had never bogged down, so I am wondering if it could stand some more prop. I'm thinking about using this worn blade the rest of the season, then getting a 3 blade for deep water and bowfishing. Sound like I'm on the right track?

These pics are a comparison of the remaining blade of the new prop and my old one.

Old prop, one I'm using now, should be 12.25"

Im not sure about your particular problem, but i can tell you that mudbuddy is having some serious quality control issues all the way around. I would call them and tell them your situation and demand they send you a new one. Cause that is ridiculous.

The old prop is super worn. U c how the blade comes to a point? U r missing a bunch of blade. Diameter may b close, but the width r surface area is much smaller. U need a new prop. The BB should have a warranty of some sort if it's that new and slung a blade from a bad casting.
We can discuss the other issues after u get a good wheel on there.

I don't think it was casting, I'm pretty sure I hit something. Then again, I wouldn't know what slinging a blade feels like, all I know is it started vibrating horrible and I shut er down.

Here is my new, broken prop. I felt it in the tiller and the wallet.

What conditions are you running? Its bullchit that a blade that new broke, no matter what, but you've already got serrations in the trailing edge like you've been grinding some sand with 'er.

What did MB have to say about the broken prop?

Age of the blade has nothing to do with one breaking- its the speed, angle, and what is hit that can cause a blade to break. There could be a casting flaw in a prop that can cause a weak point but you will usually see that in the broken edge and they don't have a problem replacing them.

I have hit a ton stuff and have broken my share of props, the common denominator on the breaks is hitting a rock at high RPM when coming down off it. I attribute that to the angle of the strike.

On the blades pictured, wearing 1.25" off any prop is going to kill its performance. Once the cup is ground off, its performance is compromised. You can grind down a prop in minutes in sand, so the age of the prop is not usually a factor, its what you run it in and how much you are grinding.

My prop IQ is terribly low as well. What is the proper way to measure?

:? Uhhh, I AM a legitimate paying customer. I pay FULL RETAIL price for EVERYTHING I order from MB or the dealer I use. My suggestion to any customer of any brand would be to find a reputable dealer that WILL give them good customer service. If I was using a dealer that sucked, I'd stop using them instead of crying about them giving bad service.

People that continuously complain about bad customer service aren't smart enough to find a different service department. Brasso bought a second MB while continuously complaining about poor customer service. Way to go.

I slung a blade on my first Pro-Drive @ 45 hours. Called KP and he sent me a new one free of charge. He just asked me to send back the broken one so he could check it out.

I would definetly give MB a call and talk to them.

broke is broke. i hit rocks hard all the time. what i dont see is any rock rash on the other blade. i know ive never hit a rock with one blade that the other didnt get a peice of it.

i understsand mb cant warranty everything all the time, but its ashame a man buys a new prop and doesnt get all the use out of it.

as for customer service, ive not had an issue with mb. only thing i can speak on is my bro-in-law. he was sold a centrifical clutch motor buy a dealer that insurred it was what he needed. he even told him he had to travel several no wake zones. well the belt blew in short order. he contacted mb , still under warranty mind you, and was told it was not the motor for him. of course that system is now dead, but he converted it to electric at full cost. not even a discount for what the centrifical warranty parts would have cost. and had to pay the same dealer labor to swap it over.
