 1854 excel with 4500 BD 2 vs 3 blade
I know that the question of which is better a 2 or 3 blade is brought up alot so I will tell my story. I bought an excel 1854 and a black death 4500 to push it. The maiden voyage was awesome with three people 700 lbs total plus 6 gallons of gas we hit mid 27's in shallow water. Once we got up on plane we could go anywhere but we could not get going again if we stopped. We were running the 2 blade and we asked around and people just said that the motor will get stronger as you put more hours on it. Well the motor I felt kept getting worse and with a total of 40 hrs on it we were burning 6 gallons of gas in 3 miles and we were sitting at the 4300 rev limit. After a lot of frustrating hunting trips and getting stuck countless times I decided to put a 3 blade on that mudbuddy gave me when I got my motor. I have heard bad things about these blades not performing so I never put it on. Well all I can say is a have a completly different boat. I was able to go from a dead stop with 1200 lbs of guys gear and gas in shallow water without a problem. I am convienced that with the type of mud I hunt in and the set up of my boat the 3 blade is the way to go. Not to mention it dropped my rpms to 3900-4000 throwing a rooster tail 20' behind me. I hope this helps somebody else out that is questioning the 2 vs 3 blade.

The mud varies but the first 6"-12" is the really sticky thick mud with a solid floor after that. I live in UT.

I just bought the Black Death 5500 and I am considering switching to a 3 blade. I run in similar mud here in Arkansas and I feel like i needed more bite when i am trying to start off in the mud.

Not sure where to find a three blade because mud buddy stopped selling them. Try searching google? Does anybody else know?

Harold Houck with Midwest Outboards has them. I emailed him before Christmas and he replied that he still has some in stock.

The MB 2 blade will outperform the MB 3 blade hands down. The problem with the 3 blade that was released was it would blow out on start up. Post a pic of your 2 blade- is it still 12.25"?
