Post Prop Questions. thinking my prop is way too big.
I bought a basket case Bog Hog mud motor. (not much to chose from up here in NE TN. I put it in the water and the boat will no plane out and feels like it has no power whatsoever. It will do less than 10mph. I spoke with backwater props, and they said I needed to know the gear ratios in order to determine prop size, and that they did not have a prop for this unit.

The Engine is a 24hp Honda gx670 and the prop os 12.5" from end to end, and is on a 1548 Xpress

Anyone have any idea what prop size I should run on this thing? And any leads on where one can be purchased?

It very could be a PD prop. It was set up this way when I bought it.

according to mudbuddy's sight I should be running a 9x6 or an 11x10. Is this correct?

you really need to know your gear ratio before messing around with props, its an expensive trial and error

Could those pods hanging off of your stern also have anything to do with it? I have heard pods can be an inhibitor more than a benefit and could adversely affect performance.

Top is a 38 tooth and bottom is a 57.

As for the pods, I think they really helped the boat when I had a 25 merc. But you could be on to something with this motor

Pods no good with surface drive.I think that prop is to big.Should be running a 11x10.Your gearing is is reduced alot. I'm running 23hp my gearing is 32 top 44 bottom. With 11x10 hill prop.On 15-48 G-3 it will run 22-23 mph

Its a combination of prop and boat.

You should be around 1.5:1 on ratio.
I'd try a prop same size as a 23 gdsd.
But the right prop won't fix the hull probs.

Looking back I wish Id bit the bullet and bought a legit MM, and a dedicated mud hull.

I wanted to be able to swap out my 25 merc, and this mud motor for conditions, trips ect. and have a back up motor in case of doen time during waterfowl season.

Now, Should I be considering / modifying the pods to make my boat work with the mud motor?

I plan on calling bog hog in the morning to get the low down on my gear and prop setup.

I found this table on MudBuddys website.

Will the Tiger prop work on my lower unit? If so should I go for the 11x10 or the 12x11?

According to my gear ratio, and mudbuddys prop chart, my prop should not be too far off, correct? I dont mind to buy a new prop but I want to make sure that will fix the problem. I gotta get this thing going before dcuk season!!!!!!

You have a 1.78:1 ratio. That means your motor is spinning 1.78 times for evert revolution of the prop. That is a good chunk of mechanical advantage.

You didn't say for sure, but I'm guessing your RPMs are low?

Plenty of folks around here with burned up props that you could try.

I have a MudBuddy Big Blade threaded. When I took it off my 35 GDSD, my boat was only running 21mph with 2 people and gear, but pushing the Rev limiter at 4300. With a new prop it runs 27 at 4100rpms, so there is a little life left to it.

If you pay for the shipping, I'll send it to you. USPS Priority Mail should be around $10.

Edit: Let me make sure it wasn't thrown away with my last Storage Shed purge.

Just watch out on the prop thread. I know bog hog uses a fine thread on their longtails vs. the industry standard 3/4-10. They may be doing the same on the surface drive...

Just got the laser tach in the mail today and tried it out on the prop. Its showing around 2700 rpms at WOT. Right after I got his figure I got the guys at Bog Hog to get me a figure on the gears. The stock bottom gear is supposed to have 47 teeth, mine has 57.

A smaller gear should give me more RPM's.

Is this pulley my answer to my problems?
