Post Lower unit seal replacement?
Just happened over the weekend... Anyone have illustrated instructions and can I get the seal at a local Napa Auto Parts?

call kp about da seal, don't know if u can cross it with anything napa might have. That's an old L/U unit.... might be a good time to consider upgrading to a new style while you takin it off anyways.

Thanks stump,
I did call and talk to KP and he's sending me out a new lower nut seal. If I understand him right, he said it's most likely leaking at the prop shaft seal (lower nut seal) and there's a vent out the top of the lower unit allowing for the oil to leak out from too much water getting sucked in past the lower seal.
So all I gotta do is remove the prop (RH thread) and then remove the nut seal behind (LH thread) and replace it with what he's sending me.
What are the advantages of the newer style lower unit?
I don't think I'm removing the lower unit and real short on funds since I just bought the hydro trim kit which I got the day before the seal went out.

I got KP to send me a new nut seal but really haven't had time to replace it much less get my new hydro trim installed.
I guess I've been running into some bad luck with this lately ...
I tried draining the gear oil but it seemed that it was too thick to drain so I tried using a portable heater but ended up melting the handle on my plastic drain pan instead...
Tried starting it up and running the drive to warm up and thin out the oil a bit but my battery took a dump...
Went to work on it the other weekend and my electric garage door opener got stuck and had to get that fixed instead...
Picked up a lower unit quart pump at West Marine and the threads aren't the same so I couldn't use it to flush the oil...
Finally got to work on it today and went to change out the nut seal and wouldn't you know it, the threads are reversed from the old one so I can't put the new nut seal on...
Figured I would just go ahead and put the new gear oil in, use the old seal nut and just go hunt tomorrow...
I'll order a new lower unit Monday...

ANYWAY, MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I believe the actual seals are still the same, just swap them from one nut to the other.[/quote]

Don't have a seal puller and I think there are three seals in it. With the luck I have, I would probably mess them up anyway...

Oh yeah, did take the boat out this AM and we did shoot 4 birds (very slow) but the lower unit wasn't pumping oil out (as of yet...) :D

but...my dog has two swollen paws and is out for tomorrow's last day of pheasant hunting
