 Skeg/Cavitation Plate
I know this has been brought up a few times, but I haven't see a post that has what I am looking for. Can anyone give me some pointers...
1) When bending the skeg to prevent it from pulling away from you do you want to bend the skeg the direction it is already bending? aka looking at the prop from the back of the motor bending it further to the left? Also positioning of the pipe wrench closer to the initial bend at the base of the skeg or closer to the outer tip? Was reading 3/4"-1" of bend is pretty safe amount.
2) When bending the skeg did you just lock your motor in place as you would while towing it on a trailer? I don't wanna mess anything up trying to bend this damn thing.
PS- I know I can shift my weight in the boat to a more centered location but even then sometimes the handle wants to continually pull away.
Thanks.
-Andrew

 Re: Skeg/Cavitation Plate
What kinda motor? I know on the new GTRs with the cast lower you're not supposed to bend the skeg.

 Re: Skeg/Cavitation Plate
I've never dealt with this personally, but in my mind, I would think you will need to bend it in the opposite direction?

 Re: Skeg/Cavitation Plate
1. Bend it towards the side you drive from a little at a time until it stops fighting you.
2. I put a wrench on the bent part right up to the crease, and do the same on the motor side, and go a little at a time. You can just lock the motor in, but I prefer to hold at the bend on both sides so the part I want bent is the only place it can bend.

 Re: Skeg/Cavitation Plate
How hard is it pulling ? Is it to the point that u would lose control if u let go? If it's bad then. You are better off moving the motor over 1" and resolving the problem that way. Bending the skeg to much causes the prop to become unprotected and starves it for water. This is prolly the reason the GT went with a straight skeg on the new motor.

 Re: Skeg/Cavitation Plate
Its not too bad... Just annoying some times. Ive driven other mud buddys and its the same. An adjustment should take care of it.

 Re: Skeg/Cavitation Plate
I may be wrong, but I believe if the motor is pulling away from you, assuming you are sitting on the starboard side, your skeg has too much bend in it and needs to be straightened a bit. If it were pushing toward you, in affect wanting to turn left, then you would add more bend. Sounds like it wants to turn right, so you want to bend right.

 Re: Skeg/Cavitation Plate
If you can get another set of hands, get them to hold the lower unit. That way you're not putting all that pressure on the tab that holds motor during trailer lock. A little at a time
