You Prolly lost the grease in the shaft tube with the spring tension.......pull your plate you Prolly broke.the shaft and slung the u joine into the top plate!

I'm fucking stupefied by the fact that GD uses universals on its surface drive model shaft line.

Oh and for informational purposes, I last greased it two weekends ago before gator hunting. I've put about 6 hours of run time on the new grease. It wasn't low prior to that either. I'm back on the big boat now though, thanks to a Boston Whaler dingy, so I won't be able to open it up til tomorrow at the earliest. Til then I'll be drinking right here and watching these fireworks go off on the thread that I was hoping would help me rather than tell me what "I" can do different next time ...

More than likely u sheared one of the key and set screw was holding it in until shaft slid out and the u joint was slinging around at 3800 rpms inside the housing. I just replaced seals shaft and lower bushing last weekend and took me hour 15 mins when U call CoCo tell him to suck a dick and just sen u parts when he tries to tell u fancy tools and a new prop. Build a tool to pull bushing (I'd post one I made but don't know how to do that off iPhone) ((take a 7/8" rod tap for 1"-8 weld washers to other end tap inside bushing hit washer with hare comes right out))and have have 4x4piece of wood and hammer to get prop off

First off, there is a CV joint in there... not a U-joint can't belive even the biggest GD owner on the site doesnt know that.

I'm with lastchance I think the CV joint failed. Maybe the bad vibrations you had been experiencing from a failing CV joint may have made an upper seal go bad causing the grease loss, but the shaft didnt seaze up and snap or the prop and shaft would have came out the end of the drive tube more than likely.

Shit happens and I think it is frikkin hilarious that a CV joint went out.
No limping back to the ramp like you could with a bad trim, failed reverse, or clutch.

Had a 23hp GDSD around 5 yrs ago. I borrowed a prop removal tool and my father who is retired welder made one for very cheap. My father still has that thing I will take a pic and post it. He had to go to a specialty store to get that nut they use, and was able to use some scrap steel from his union, It looks identical.

Terry, you use your motors more than once or twice a month, therefore you are not qualified to comment on the reliability of a motor.

Woodie before u call someone out u may want to get ur facts straight. The gdlt and gdsd both use u joints. A cv joint or constant velocity joint use balls moving on a main spherical hub that allows for the misalignments. A u joint uses a cross with 4 hubs and 4 caps filled with needle bearings.
