Post subject:  What to use as sealant on lower unit

I recently changed the seals on the lower end of the shaft on a 2008 mudbuddy long tail (27 hp). The stainless screw in cap at the end of the shaft that holds the seals in place has an o-ring at the base of the threads. Mud buddy uses some fancy aircraft grade sealant to help creat a watertight seal when it is closed back up. Any opinions out there on what to use that you can find at a local auto store. It would need something that would not harden like glue- maybe engine gasket sealant? Do you even need to seal it or just tighten it down and not worry about it? Thanks

I use a sealant called "The Right Stuff" from any auto parts store when I rebuild differentials. It is some good stuff. I'm sure it can be used just fine in that application.

it is a gasket shellac. I think permatex is the one that has the "indian head" brand. I use one from loctite called aviation gasket sealant. it is very messy and has to wear off so be careful.
