Post subject: | New jam nut - where / what kind? |
I had to split the jam nut to get the prop off of my 27 kohler long tail beavertail... Now I need to get a new one. Ace hardware was no help... Where can I get a new jam nut and what kind of material should it be to prevent rust, brass? The 4 washers between the jam nut and the prop are also very thin and worn. Should I replace these with brass washers? I have heard different opinions on slack in the prop when installed, can someone point me to, or list the correct install procedure... Thanks in advance. |

I'd want to get it from the factory - cause they would likely have done a little RnD getting it right.... The 2 trains of thought that I know of on a threaded shaft LT are... Hand tighten the prop and retaining nut - using an anti-sieze compound with brass washers on both sides of the prop.... Leave 1/4 turn of slack in prop to retaining nut - so that it will "free itself" when in use... But that sounds like heck right at first - so I always went with option 1 and needed a torch and weapons to get the dang thing off 100 hours later - a prop removal tool helps too - 50.00 at GD - or make your own weapons - LOL |

He is running a Beavertail longtail. I owned one at one time. You will probably have to replace the bushings and the nut. Unless you can find any the same size, you will have to get some replacements from the factory. Get you some extra for maintenance. As Giga stated, you do not have to tighten the nut any more than handtight. Actually the nut is more for thread protection on the shaft and nothing more. The prop will not just come off by itself. Use some brass neverseize or Loctite marine when you put the prop back on. |
