Post subject: | Prop worn out or not? |
Just wondering if anyone could tell by the pictures if my prop is worn out. This a factory prop on a 36 pd. The hull is a phowler series extreme 17x52. With me 140 lbs, dog 80 lbs, two optima batteries, trolling motor, and 6 gallons of gas all I can get out of the boat is 24 m.p.h. My rpm's at that speed are at 4000 which i think about right. Can anybody help me out? |

Why not take it off and put a tape measure on it and find out? |

Measure the prop from tip to tip. U can leave it on the boat. Where is your fuel tank and batteries located? |

I have measured the prop, sorry forgot about forgetting that info. It measures just a tad over 12" tip to tip. According to the guy at Pro Drive though; the prop could still be worn out even though it measures 12- 12 1/4". The gas tank is under the front deck in the middle and the batteries are in the back. |

Also measure the width - across the fattest part of the blade... Sand tends to wear them at mid-blade more than at the tips... If it is the same Hopkins design as GD uses they are about 4 1/2" across when new and at about 4" they are worn out but a re-cup will put some life back as a spare... |

Well I'm not sure who is right or wrong, but either way the prop has been in a quite a bit of shallow sandy rivers now fishing. Thats why I put pictures on here to see if anyone could tell by the amount of cup it had if it was worn out or not. I don't really know any other reason the boat would be running only 24 when I should be getting upper twenties with that load I believe. The pd guy also said I should be getting a strong 27-27 m.p.h. with that load too. |

After clicking on that pic and enlarging it, I would say you need a new prop. I can see the rippling on the edges from being run in sand. And even if the new prop is not the fix now, it will be soon. Props seem to last me around 50 hours before they start to effect performance. |
