 Is MB on crack?
I am hookin up duals with hydrolic steerin. MB sent two rams that conect together. To run my lines they have the running into one ram out of it then into the second then back 2 the pump. Shouldnt they be hooked up paralel instead of in series?

 Re: Is MB on crack?
You should have only one ram with a jockey bar tying the two motors together. Thats the right way.

 Re: Is MB on crack?
jus dont see how oil is goin 2 flow thru one ram then into the other. I think it should be tee'd on each line then one line to each ram.

 Re: Is MB on crack?
You can hook it up one of 2 ways. If you hook them up "parrralel" as you call it you will have to turn the steering wheel 8 turns to get from far left to right. If you hook them up as in the instructions, then it cuts the amount of turns from far left to right in half, so the steering is much more responsive.

 Re: Is MB on crack?
thanks boat dr. How is it better 2 have 2 rams when u hook them up that way? An how does the oil get 2 the 2nd ram. Seems like it would hold air between them.

 Re: Is MB on crack?
1) it is a little bit of a pain in the ass to do, but you must bleed that line that joins the 2 inside fitting on together. Once it is full of fluid you never have to touch it again, and all it does is keep from having slack in the system (if it had air in it the air would compress, but hydraulic fluid does not).
2) the reason for 2 rams is that the steering system will produce more power, and being that they oppose each other they help offset any torque that the 2 engines will produce...........as well as if you hit a very hard object less chance of breaking being that you have 2 cylinders vs 1.

 Re: Is MB on crack?
Yea, it is kinda hard to understand how those rams (cylinders) work, and I dont know if I can make much sense of this, but: The fitting that is the furthest from where the ram exits the cylinder pushes fluid, and forces the ram out. The other fitting pulls fluid, thus retracting the ram, however the force of trying to pull the fluid back into the helm is subtancially less. So by mounting the cylinders in an opposing direction you have one ram pushing out while the other is retracting.......... and by only hooking up the outside chambers of each cylinder you reduce the amount of fluid required to turn the system.
Does that make sense of how the overall system is working, or confuse you even more?

 Re: Is MB on crack?
Mount the 2 motors, mount the cylinders on each motor, fabricate the tie bar and hook it up, and ensure that the motors operate freely from far left to far right. Before you hook up the 2 hoses that come from the helm, hook up the hose that joins the cylinders together. Get a cap with a nipple that screws onto the bottle of hydraulic fluid, and attach a (clear) hose from it to one of the cylinders. Put another hose (bout 2' long) onto the other cylinder and open both bleeders. Then hold the bottle of hydraulic oil upside down and force fluid into the cylinder till the other hose starts to get fluid in it (have a friend hold the other hose up so that it doesnt run all over the place and just hold pressure on the bottle till the opposite hose is about 1/2 full) and then manually push the motors from far left to far right a couple of times till you dont see any air bubbles come out of either of the bleeders. Close the bleeders, then hook up the 2 hoses from the helm and bleed the system as per the instructions from teleflex.

 Re: Is MB on crack?
The flow will be the same being the cylinders stay filled with oil and you dumping oil from one to the next. The pressure rating may be more , would have to calculate what the cylinders require in order to supply system with optimum psi to operate effectively.

 Re: Is MB on crack?
I am not the best at explaining shiat, but from one to two, psi is the same, the gpm would have to be more, not meaning it would take more oil, just more gpm pump to move one versues two.

 Re: Is MB on crack?
gpm does not mean you need more oil in your tank, just means the pump has to move more oil. But to know exactly would take the specs on hyd cylinders. If you have the correct pressure but not the right gpm then setup would not function proper. and vice versa, correct gpm and not correct pressure, system will not function proper. I deal with massive amounts of Hydraulic problems, from crane boom cylinders, to winches, to boat steering, to my boats 500 ton elevating hyd motors with planetaries. I am no engineer, but i do have to trouble shoot on a daily basis.
