I have a mud buddy LT that I just put a 20hp honda engine on.

The prop that is on it now is a 8x4 but im sure its worn down on the edges. I have this motor on a 1448 Tracker Grizzly Jon. Im not even getting the boat to plane out with no load?

I know it needs a prop. But what size should I go with? Im thinking a 9x5 or 9x4? This is a heavy boat, myself and another guy with dog and gear. Id say 500lb load.

If I cant get 15mph from this setup I will be selling it.

Thanks for your help. Up here in Canada you dont see many surface drive motors. So I want to get this prop selection right when I order a new one. I was thinking deal with Mud buddy directly for a replacement? I have emailed Ron Hill a couple times. He seems cheaper, But I see most guys here say to stay away from him???

Am I asking to much for a 20HP LT to push my 1448 at 15mph? Im lucky to see 6mph. I also notice that there is not much increase in speed from half throttle to full?

I'd imagine that you should see at least 15 mph out of it. I can get 14mph out of my 16hp gdlt with me one other guy, extra fuel, and a whole bunch of brush (prepin the blind for teal season)

Go ahead and order it from MB, they have those props matched to preform on thier frames.

As far as speed, that all depends on load, current, water depth ect.

My 13 on a 1442 runs 14 empty, about 500 lbs of gear 11 and any more than that it plows.

With that hull, you may see 16-18 empty and be able to plain with 650 lbs or so.

Thanks guys. My boat is also a 20" transome? I have read on here that some guys say it dont make much differance. I did bend the cav plate up at the end just a little. One more question... Do you guys think its worth trying to sell my currant prop? Or is it Junk?

I've been told you can have them re-worked. I don't know any details about it myself but I plan on lookin into it here shortly. Maybe someone will chime in on it with more info.

I just bought a 9x5 from back water for my 20 honda beavertail and it works very well. I am a commercial turtle trapper and haul a lot of weight at times and get around 8-10mph loaded and 18 empty.. IMO your prop was to small to start with...

8x4 doesnt seem too small for that. but a 9x5 would work great. you could even go a little larger if you wanted i would expect. LT's are geared lower than SD's and can usually handle larger props with same hp.

Longtails are direct drive not geared at all. Surfacedrives are geared lower and turn larger diameter and more pitch. example: 23hp sd turns an 11x10; 23 lt turns a 9x5 or 9x6 and thats the rest of the story.
