 Merc trim and componets question
I have a 23hp mbsd with the merc trim and every now again the trim will stop working for a moment then regain function....My question is do the two relay/solnoid (forgive my spelling) have a load limit switch built into them? ( to clarify if they get hot will they shut down and not function) the reason I ask is I have check for shorts from the football back down and have found nothing took apart all conections cleaned and put die electric grease on them and still have the problem....seems to be a trend that when it stops working that I can hear the top relay ( mounted on the back of the starter) click then wait a minute clicks again and trim starts working..I have not had time to diagonse to see if that relay controls up or down or exactly how they are wired.....seems to be that the trim quits only when trimming up......any info would be appreciated
Thanks Will Hobbs

Re: Merc trim and componets question
Sounds like you're putting too much load on the trim and it's tripping the breaker.

Re: Merc trim and componets question
thats what it acts like but wouldnt think just the weight of the motor would do it......had it out of the water and in the shop when I discovered it so no extra load.....gonna pick up another relay today swap em out and see what happens....mainly want to eliminate trim unit itself as being the problem

Re: Merc trim and componets question
Ahhhh, ok, I missed that part. In that case, I'd bet either a bad breaker (on the back of the starter), or shorted wire.

Re: Merc trim and componets question
Are those true breakers or relays with a set of contacts that carry the load of the trim motor where you can have a lower amp switch

Re: Merc trim and componets question
Self resetting breakers on the back of starter, relays are under the HD Sport plate on transom bracket.
