 Gear Ratios
I have read the PD has a 1:1.50 ratio stock. The MB runs a 1:1.31 stock. What does GT and GD run for gear ratio?
Have many of you played with different gear ratios in the lower unit?
What are the advantages and drawbacks of going up or down?

 Re: Gear Ratios
I THINK gator tail is 1.25 to 1 or 1.50 to 1.

 Re: Gear Ratios
I believe Go Devil is:
35 hp -- 1.4 to 1 27 hp -- 1.6 to 1 23 hp -- 1.7 to 1
I would like to know if there are any aftermarket pulleys available to get to 1.2 or 1 to 1 gearing ???
I believe that would allow efficient use of a smaller diameter prop for shallow water grinding as well as giving up more speed with mods.
Go Devil does not yet offer this feature or option.

 Re: Gear Ratios
This is something that I have played a lot with on outbard motors and conventional inboard mudboats. If you want to go faster you lower you gear ratio and lower your prop diameterwhile increasing prop pitch. If you want low end torque over speed you raise your gear ratio while deccreasing prop pitch and increasing prop diameter.

 Re: Gear Ratios
I have tried the 1: 1.31, 1.26, and 1.21 ratios with the same prop- trying to get the right balance of speed and hole shot. The best being in the middle but going to try something new on the prop next and that may have me pulling out the gear puller again.

 Re: Gear Ratios
personally I like the 2.3 to 1 reduction unit with a superwide 80" Whilrwind prop. Seems to be no place I can't run.

i like my 2 to 1 with the 3blade 78" powerplus blades, but i'd like to try a 2.6 to 1 and the 3 blade maxus prop.

 Re: Gear Ratios
JD
LT props work in the surfacing mode too with the cav plate 3 inches above water... Pull 2 to 3 mph more speed that way... But hard as heck, physically, to keep up for more than a mile at a time... For me on my rig any way...
I can tell you from a particular spot with semihard bottom 4 inches of water the LT could blast out with load and minimal grind...
Similar boat with SD was beside me - I took most of his load - and yes he blasted out too - but ground a lot more prop off in doing it...
Sure hp per hp the SD is 20% faster - no doubt - mostly due to larger diameter and greater pitch...
Difference it real -- just my opinion based on real world experience...
PS - owned both LT and SD... SD more fun - LT is bad to the bone tho...

 Re: Gear Ratios
PPS - If running over a long sandbar 2 inches deep
In the SD - you hit it WFO and hope you made it and "burn" some prop
In the LT - you reduce speed till your V wake combines at the prop, at about 14 to 16 mph - pop into surfacing mode - and run over that sandbar with only minimal prop contact with the bottom, cause prop is in an "artifical" water column that is 5 to 6 inch. Kinda like the water column a tunnel hull makes for an outboard.
If you ain't done it you may not understand it...
Would it work for a SD - I don't know - but I might like to try and see ! Cause I got more sand than soft bottom - and dem props are expensive.
Burn a SD prop every 15 to 30 hours here, that's $10 per hour or more. Good thing they don't burn much fuel per hour - my Yammy 90hp eats 3 gph so it costs about $10 per hour too. Dang I see a patern here !

 Re: Gear Ratios
you're a fucking idiot....ain't NO propeller powered motor of anykind making it over 2" of water on a sandbar for more than about 6 feet (if it's going 27 to start with)....then you're lucky if two people can push it off after untangling your head from your ass since you flew 10 feet over the bow when your boat came to a screeching halt Pull the plug on your internet dumbass

 Re: Gear Ratios
Well listening to Tony B on the MMT Radio...
I don't think he has a vision for MMT to be a place for guys to talk down to each other or grind any axes...
A new hunting season is coming...
I'd like to put the past differences with anybody and everybody, where they belong, in the past, and move on...
So in an effort to make ammends to any or all - happy mud motoring !
