 How much gear lube PD
How much gear lube does the old style PD lower unit hold. Mine was fully drained over the course of 2 hours and when I refilled it I could only get it to hold 16 oz. which is half of what I was figuring. I even put the plug back in and hand turned the prop 2 revolutuions to make sure there were no air pockets. When I removed the plug gear lube started pouring out so it must be full. What do ya'll think

Re: How much gear lube PD
You are supposed to fill it from bottom plug. That's close thou

Re: How much gear lube PD
I did fill it from the bottom plug, and as I stated it started running out the top when I hit 16 oz. in. I put the top plug in, removed tip of bottle from lower hole and put that plug in, hand turned prop 2 revs and checked level at top plug which was still showing full so evidently no air pockets causing a misread level.
I'm just curious why this time it only took 16 oz. I was thinking more along the lines of 32 oz. (1 qt.)

if you think about it isn't much room in there for it . the Lu housing isn't very big and the shaft takes up most of the room

Re: How much gear lube PD
Might be a dumb question, But why do they recomend filling from the bottom to the top, instead of leaving the bottom plugged and filling until it reaches the top fill hole?

Re: How much gear lube PD
they claim that air can be trapped in the needle bearings when filling it from the top. i am not sure about it because i believe it will work its way out in about .03 seconds. thats them not me

Re: How much gear lube PD
fill from top until it runs out and then recheck it after you run it. Done

Re: How much gear lube PD
Takes less than a qt. I always fill from top. I actualy over fill a bit and then plug it. You could turn the prop by hand if you think you need to work the lube down. Every time I have changed the lube it was still slightly over filled.
