My buddy just bought an older mud buddy balanced drive. The bearings are gone so he's trying to round up the parts to rebuild it now. I'm a bit confused though. I thought there were on two variations of there out drive. Either a 36"/48" threaded shaft, or a 27"/32" hex shaft. This thing has a 32" threaded shaft. The skeg on the out drive looks like one from a balance drive but the support bracket looks like one from a HD. And it has the "V" coged pully like the balance drives. Was there a little known variation that was a bastard child of the two completely different out drives? If so, can this shaft still be bought? and also which parts would you use to rebuild it? He's not considering upgrading to the newer out drives yet so he's only looking for info on parts.

have you talked to him today?? were trying to get the parts all together, they dont offer some of them anymore. it is a steel shaft, not ss, the housing is thinner than the new ones, and the belt is rated for far less hp than straight tooth.

Turned out to be a 36, not 32

yeah that's exactly what he did.
Don't think he's gonna mees with the pullies and belt right now. He just got the boat and wants to get it running before he starts upgrading parts.

He can either do it now while he's already got it apart, or wait until he's 8 miles from anywhere, where nobody with an outboard can get to him, & that chitty belt breaks. Hope he don't have his wife & kids with him when it does break. Ya notice I didn't say "if" huh?

After reading this i'm damn glad I changed out my tractor tread pulleys for straight toothed replacements. I had read several times where those older style pulleys sucked. SO while I was rebuilding my basket case I ordered new straight toothed. Replaced the bearings seals and the shaft. It had about .125 runout on the end? Didn't know if that was cool but being a tool and die maker that wasn't gonna fly with me. Might as well replace everything! That way I've got a brandy new 2005 36" hd.
