Guy's, I wanted to see if anyone has noticed a differnce in speed if they cut down the skeg on the bottom of the GTR Shaft. The only reason I ask is because on my first GTR it came with a huge bolt on peice that added about an inch to the depth and it was about twice as wide. Hyot said that if I wasn't running in rough terrian to take it off and I would notice a difference in speed, I took it off and my boat ran about 3-4 miles per hour faster. It put the Skeg about (I guess) 4" to 4 1/2" inches deep from the bottom of the shaft housing. On my new motor the Skeg comes down a solid 5 1/2" from the bottom of the shaft housing. It sticks lower then the prop and I'm running the 12" big blade. I'm running a 18 x 54 CC, And I'm only running about 25 avg. No mods to the motor. I'm considering cutting down the skeg to see if makes a difference in speed. What do you think? |

How many rpm you running? I doubt that in open water the skeg is slowing you down. I'd be looking into leaking valves |

You want it to stick down past your prop a little bit to protect the prop from strikes. Have you tried running GT's 11" prop? |

don't cut the skeg. However you should consider having your valves checked out. I'd bet money they are leaking. |

Thanks for the comments guys, I'm running between 3700 to 3800 at max speed. It has been like this from day one since the first time I put it in the water. So if it is my Valves, it must have been messed up from the factory. Can the valves be adjusted? Or is there something I can do to check them or will I need to bring it in? I have never tried a different prop, but I was considering it. My buddy has a 9" that GT use to put on the motors before they switched to the 12", I was going to try it just to see if it made any diffence in Speed. I know it wouldn't help take off but may improve on overall speed. |

That prop won't help. I'm with them check then valves. But your speeds are not really bad. Maybe a little slow. |
