Seems every time I change the LU oil it is milky. This time I noticed a gap in the lower allen screw that water may be entering from. I just had the seals replaced two years ago so this would seem to be the culprit. I have used sealant tape in the past, but was told I may want to look at using a thread sealer(tube type).......what do ya all use for sealing these threads when you change the LU oil. I really hope I dont have to retap this. Thoughts are appreciated. |

Teflon tape will fix your problem, and running a tap through it will be easy if you gotta do it. |

Thanks CCC. I usually use teflon tape. the only reason these pics dont show it is because I was trying to flush out the LU a couple of time and did not use any tape. Would I be better off with liquid sealer, and if so what type/brand. Looking at what is best to use to fill the gap. Thanks. |

I've never used the liquid one so idk, wrap the shit out of it with Teflon |

That just looks like its at the outside edge. The threads are deep enough that it should not be an issues. Make several wraps with teflon and force it into the hole so its really tight. And just because you changed seals 2 years ago doesnt mean that they are not bad. I will say that a little milky or off colored gear oil is no big deal to me. If its not pouring water out when you pull the plug then I would not be overly concerned. Gear oil is cheap. |

Are you seeing the milky color after the motor sits for a while or immediately after running it? If its immediately after you could just have "frothiness" caused by air bubbles. Just my two cents. |

So I ended up buying the lower seal and nut combo from PD. Any suggestions on installing it? I am assuming just unscrew the old one, maybe a little emory cloth to the shaft, reinstall the new one and put the prop back on. Since the new one is already packed with grease......should be pretty straight forward?? Other than that I am just going to wrap the teflon tape on the allen screws a few times to prevent any water coming in there. |

Nickel Teflon tape, we use it on SS, it keeps shit from galling. But I use it when the plug and housing are dissimilar metals for the lubrication of the nickel in it and it seems to tighten up better, conventional Teflon has "no bottom", can't seem to ever get it tight. I use it all over, beats the shit out of regular Teflon everyday... Just my .02 $ |

One last question....How much do you torque the seal nut down, hand tight and then a little past??? Thanks for your help gents |

I'm not real sure sanding on the driveshaft is a great idea, unless you're just trying to clean it and get the junk off. Make sure not to remove any metal. And remember, lower seal nut is reverse threads. |

i think lowes or home depot should carry it, any good supply store, or online at grainger, its hard to say up there, down here it is pretty readily available, all the oil field supply houses carry it grainger |
