Taking prop off lower unit pd
I had to get a new lower unit for my 27 pd. I put the new one on yesterday by myself- which was a hell of a job by the way- but I made a rather large mistake. I followed the directions that were sent, but I didn't realize I should have taken the prop off first. Now my old lower unit is on the floor of my garage with my prop still attched, and the new lower unit is completely installed. Without being able to stop the shaft or the prop from spinning, I can't even get the prop to budge. I hope there's a way to get this prop off without having to start the whole process over again- twice. Has anyone done this before? I was thinking of using a vice somehow.

are you going to throw the old lower unit away? if so, just put a pipe wrench on the top spline. other than that, the only way I can think of is to take your spline adaptor off the motor and put that over the spline coming out the top of the lower unit, then you can put a pipe wrench on that.

Re: Taking prop off lower unit pd
Pro Drive recommended putting a pipe wrench on the spline and putting the lower unit in a vice. It worked- I could give it all I've got, but the prop wouldn't budge. Not even a little bit. I used a 3.5 foot piece of 2 x 4 for a prop wrench like they recommended, and it just shredded after that amount of torque. Any ideas?

I don't see any other option but to put it back on the motor. After the first time you remove the LU it gets easy. Less than an hour, maybe not what you want to do, but then again you wasted 5 day messing with it and making calls. Why fight it.

Re: Taking prop off lower unit pd
I got it secure enough using the vice and pipe wrench to wear it would break a 2x4. I'd rather not put that much stress on my motor. It wouldn't slip at all the way i had it set up. I think the guy who owned the motor before me might have put it on too tight ( the directions say to hand tighten). If he wrench tightened it on and loctited it then what options to I have? Heat it up? Cut it off and drill out the shaft? or just chunk it?

Re: Taking prop off lower unit pd
By the way, I had a spare prop. So this issue isn't putting my motor out of commission. I just want to save the prop that is stuck if I can.

If you broke your prop wrench, maybe should get a better one

Re: Taking prop off lower unit pd
You would not be putting stress on the motor by doing that. But it creates a solid hold to torque the prop against. And unless you returning that LU to PD I wouldn't bugger up the shaft or any of the parts incase they are needed down the road. The reason you only need to screw the prop on hand tight is because running the motor tightens it up. I subscribe to the therory of taking the prop and LU off for maintenance every year or so myself. Helps in making sure everything gets grease and does not freeze up.

Re: Taking prop off lower unit pd
no need to put it back on da motor if u got it held solid in a vice with a pipe wrench keepin da shaft from turnin.... but wood obviously ain't cuttin it so u gonna have to step up to a real prop wrench made out of aluminum or iron. Da previous owner prolly just beat it on der real good hittin a bunch of stumps.
2" x 3/8" aluminum flatbar about 2.5~3' long with a 3/4" hole drilled about 4" from one end is all u need.

Re: Taking prop off lower unit pd
1. send the old one to prodrive and tell them ur a big pussy and couldn't get the prop off, could they please take the prop off for u.
2. man up and secure the lower unit like u had before. get a 8# hammer and place a peice of wood top of the prop to protect it and beat the crap out of it till it comes off.
3. get a metal prop removial tool and remove the prop.
NEXT TIME USE MARINE GRADE NEVERSEIZE ONCE A YR OR SO AND IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN. !!!
