New seals and a new gasket required???

Coles notes - removed the drain screw at the bottom of the motor - red oily drainage (almost had the consistency of transmission fluid) drips out. Remove the lower unit - water, clutch powder, and red fluid fill about the bottom 1" in the lower housing. Drain it all out - cleaning it up currently.
What is this red stuff? My shaft has good grease in it from what I can tell - havent refilled it yet. But the grease seems very viscous- not watered down.

Thoughts? ?

it looks kind of like that ooze that comes off red high temp lithium grease when it sits for long periods? when I reassemble transmissions I use a red assembly lube trans jel, it turns really running after it warms up, could be residule from assembly/re-assembly no signs of leaks higher up?

it doesn't look like it is on the belt is it? is that housing just sealed with silicone around the rim? if you can see the seal under that pulley, I would try pumping grease into LU unassembled to see if that seal is holding - don't try and blow that seal out (like some knuckleheads do with bearing buddies) just want to see if it is holding and you don't have a bad seal

I may try your suggestion first - a pump or two to see if the seals are holding - good call

Seals were fine. No clue what that red oil was. But tore the lower unit apart and reassembled and all is good. Put fresh grease in the shaft. No issues. Getting the screws off behind the clutch was a pita - and virtually impossible

Crows foot was useless

Your really getting to know that motor well. After you get it all back together put a small bead of silicone around and smooth it with your finger. Make shure it sealed well. Hope it runs great for ya!

Possibly. Going to try using a ratchet style stubby wrench tonight. If not - custom tool required.

To get this thread back on topic, that red grease (or at least is what is left of it) is what MB uses at the factory when they build a drive. I'd be willing to bet that it has been between the seal and the releif hole (for quite a few years), and you inadvertently over filled the drive thus pushing that grease out of the front seal.........oh and it when it gets old, it gets a little runny.
