I'm trying to figure out how to take the nut and prop off my newly acquired 31hp short shaft and I was wondering if you guys know of the best way to do that.. I've done it on long shafts before but never a short shaft. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks! The gee |

hmm. Ok, but don't you need to keep the prop from spinning? |

You can use a big ass pipe wrench over the hub to keep it from spinning. This works, but it's a bit crude for my liking. I did it this way once. Shortly after that fiasco, I built a spanner wrench of sorts that has two 1/2" dia. rods that lay in the radius intersection of the blades and the hub. I welded those rods into a 3' piece of 1/2 x 1 cold rolled bar for a handle. The issue is having to hold the shaft from spinning while you remove the or loosen the prop. The trick is imo, a sharp blow to the prop, not steady pressure. For the nut the spanner wrench and a 1/2" drive impact wrench. I haven't found any prop nuts or props I could break loose with it! I made it originally for my Go Devil long tail years ago but it adapted fairly easy to the sd too. I've actually taken a couple off for guys that I ended up having them jump on the spanner wrench in order to break the prop loose! FYI: Use a copper based anti seize on the threads and thrust washers and don't use sparingly............. Good luck |

I got her off. Thanks for all your help guys! I used a pipe wrench on the old prop and put the socket on the nut with a cheater bar and she finally broke lose. Talk about a MILLION times easier than those threaded shafts on my old long tail. Whoever came up with the idea of that hex shaft deserves a pat on the back! Thanks for the help guys, I really appreciate it. The Gee |
