Post 35GTR- Strange but cool thing happening.
My motor started doing something strange, but so far I like it. However, I'm wondering if it is hard on the lower unit or something is seriously wrong...

When I'm in forward "gear" and get below 980 rpms the prop disengages completely. My motor idles perfectly at 930 rpms. Basically, it goes to neutral without me having to move the switch to the neutral/start position. Then as soon as I give the throttle some gas, it reengages. It makes maneuvering easy and I really like it. The only downside is when it does reengage into forward it really jolts the boat since it doesn't reengage until about 1600 rpms.

What is causing this and is it something that is serious? belt tension?

Sounds like it could be a bad connection at the clutch switch. Open your control box and make sure all your wires and connectors are all secure.

Dont know anything specific abt the gtr, but it sounds more like an electrical prob than belt for sure. I'm guessing battery is getting weak or bad connection and when your rpms drop there's not enough output from the alternator to hold the clutch in. Then when you start throttling up the voltage climbs and the clutch engages.

I'd love to switch it over, but I'm afraid its more than I can handle. I don't want to screw something up and get left with a pile of junk that doesn't work.

actually its not hard at all pretty easy to do the switch once you figure out what wires go where its real simple to hook up
