What year do you have?
I am having the same issue with mines, but it comes out of the top the housing at the clutch.
I ordered a new prop seal to see if the water if forcing it out the top.

Drain your LU oil and see if theres water in it. if so, then it will probably be your lower prop seal, which should be an easy fix!

Its an 06. When i got home i pulled the plug and theres no water in but it was real dark and thick like never been changed before thick. It has 300 hours on it and ole boy i got it from said he just did all that but i was to anxious to check and guess i got the shaft. And its not coming from the clutch area its down lower than that. There was another thread on here i was reading and it doesnt seem to be to difficult.

Somebody will correct me if I'm wrong....or may confirm if right...but, call PD and let them know what you have. I think they have an upgrade kit for the Gen I LU's that will give you the greased outdrive shaft and HP seals.

Both times that have worked on my gen 1, KP has only suggested a new top seal and bottom seal nut. No mention of any type of conversion. I have changed my top seal twice in 6 yrs

Post subject:  Re: This is gonna suck

Just got off the phone with prodrive and no conversion for gen 1 its only for gen 2s. Set of seals and nut about 100 bucks and they refund 65 when they get the nut back. So no an exspensive fix and i get to learn some more about the lu.

Post up how you broke it down to fix it if you don't mind. Had to get the upper done on my 06 too but I had a guy do it for me because I wasn't sure what to do . May try to do it myself next time

Be holding on to your lower unit or have a block under it when you take the 4 LU spacer bolts out. Its going straight toward the floor when the last one comes out :o

Step 1: Take the engine/clutch off top of the tower. Undo the engine mount bolts, probably gonna need a 2x4 or a couple of pry bars to get it to break free.

Step 2 - Place a floor jack snug against the skeg while tower is in the vertical position. My Gen II had six bolts at the top of the tower to release the spacers and LU. If the Gen I's have 4, more power to ya! Back out the tension knob, take the top bolts out, lower the floor jack. Depending on how far off the ground your boat is on the trailer, you may need to trim up to slide everything out. Have a bunch of plastic visqueen laying underneath to catch the excess grease and to have a place for the LU assembly.

Step 3 - Unbolt the top seal and replace.

Be careful with the flanges on the inner bushings. They are pretty "friable" and the lips can break pretty easily.

Here are a few pics.

No idea. You can download the owners manual PDF from PD web site. KP sent me the seal swap print out 6-7yrs ago. He may still have it, but this is all there is other than the owners manual. Should work for your purposes, there is nothing complicated about the LU design

Just realizing JD had posted those pages from the manual. Def different from the Gen II.

Looks simple enough just something new to me. I work all day with sheet metal and bondo and welders. All the pics and manuals will definitely help. I downloaded the gen 1 manual and printed as another reference. Anyone know if i can get a carb rebuild kit from prodrive? Figure while its apart i can do that and go through other seals and gaskets probably replace just to ease my mind.

Well got the seal, which i thought was a set, yesterday. It was only the nut in front of the prop. Simple task other than getting the prop off. Drained the remaining fluid and filled her back up seemed to do the trick. Apparently the inner seal in the n ut wen t bad allowing water to get in and oil to come out the vent. Gonna dunk her this weekend and hopefully all is well. Thank all you guys for the help.

Yeah thats what i thought as well, but we shall see. It made since when the guy from prodrive explained it and thus far spinnin the prop on land no leaks. But ill water test it and go from there.
