Rebuilding the entire lower unit on my 23 Dixie. The shaft housing is cracked so I'm completely rebuilding it. I want to replace the stock shaft while I'm doing all of this. My question is cold roll steel strong enough? I've heard of some guys using 5086 aluminum? Let me know what Yall think. Thinking about going back with 7/8" shaft, whichever material. Thanks in advance. |

Are you considering using aluminum for shaft material? Or the housing... Sort of confused on what your intent is. I can't see how using aluminum for a shaft would be a good idea for anything.... |

My idea is to use 7/8" cold roll steel or tainless. I talked to a guy who said he knew a few guys using 5086. I didn't know what 5086 was, so I looked it up and sure enough its aluminum. Sounds like he's mistaken to me.. |

If 5086 you looked up is aluminum then yes that's not right. No shafts are aluminum. Go with cold roll. |
