Post GTR lower unit seal
(2011 GTR 35) My rear seal blew out a couple months i replaced them (not the first time i do it). Everything was fine the first few hours now when i purge the grease it is discolored like water got in the shaft. Question - is there anywhere else water can get in the shaft?

Is your LU the straight tube or the cone shaped? If its the straight tube, you've got seals on each end. The cone style may have addition seals in the center. I say that due to the re-greasing methods of each. If you're only applying grease thru a single zirt, then chances are the bottom seal is bad again. There's no place else for it to get in.

I checked in the belt housing its full of grease I assume the front seals are busted. Does any have a thread on replacing the front seals? I searched no luck

Redo the entire shaft while your in there. $125 for a parts kit.
I can walk you through the process if you need. If you do not have STRONG snap ring pliers you might aswell buy a set or you can pay someone to do it. They have 2 Really large snap rings that retain the seal and bearing behind the front taper lock pulley.

Post Re: GTR lower unit seal
I just recently gave my new LU it's first complete grease change at 14 hrs. It now has 18 hrs on it. It's the same unit as cordgrass', only without reverse. Im curious to know how long the seals in these LU's "typically" last before needing to be replaced. My usage is about 50/50 between deep and shallow running. Moderate mud and grass when in shallow mode and hardly any stumps or hard obsticles to speak of. I'm running a 12x10 2 blade GT prop, totally stock. I have made it a habit now to pull the plug screw and add a little fresh grease after each use. Do any of you fellow mudders using this GT LU have any input as to how often you've been having to replace your seals? Just curious if there's a base line or if you just keep looking for grease in the belt housing and do the repair when it shows up.

If you're talking about the cone shaped LU replacing the straight tube type LU, I dont know if the base plate will bolt up to the belt housing. I replaced my LU to get rid of the original LU GT had come out with. The cone shaped unit is what I believe to be their 3rd generation of outdrives. The one I originally had was a 1st generationand a real SOB to service, even for them. That's what initiated the design change to Gen 2. The most recent design (cone) is also cast aluminum now. I guess you could call GT (ask for Brett or Hoyt) and they'll tell you if gen 3 is a straight plug and play replacement for gen 2.

The new cone shaped cast lower will not bolt up on the older frames. A seal kit for the older LU is $125 and a new shaft is $110.

Did you pry them off or did they just fall off? Can't say for sure but I don't think they're supposed to come off. I've never really studied mine to see how they're made, but we had to really wack mine to get it off and they stayed intact.

He hasn't made a reply to his own thread in almost a week... If he was in a bind for it Id assume he would be here asking more questions. So, with that being said.... No, I don't know anything. I just like to practice my hijacking skills.
