| Post subject: | PD Short Shank to Long Shank Conversion |
Looking for some installation info for converting my short shank to long shank (gen II). I've got the parts and PD did send along some instructions with it but are a little "lite" in my opinion. I've got a call and email into KP to see if he can walk me through some of the gaps in the instructions, but haven't heard back yet. Anybody got some experience on the conversion? Tried doing some searches but didn't come up with any good results. Thanks in advance. |

I literally just ordered the conversion kit. What part are you unsure about? From what they said and what I read here, it seems pretty straight forward other than welding the new spacer in place... |

That's the piece that I'm unclear about. The instructions I have say weld all around the bevel. Just not clear to me |

Can you post a pic of that spacer? The way I understood it was that it was made to self align more or less. Then there was a slight bevel on the edge to give you more surface area to weld to. |

I should have mine in pretty quickly. But from the pics and instruction, I would put in that lower spacer and start a weld at the inside corner of that bevel and build it up all the way out flush to the outer wall. |

Not sure how well you can see it, but I just welded the bevel full. It sits in there pretty tight and lines up perfect. Pretty easy install. |

KP did return my call and was able to provide some additional details. Once I got it disassembled it became more and more clear. Didn't realize my Argon bottle was empty, so won't be able to finish it up this weekend. When I pulling it apart I did notice something looked a little odd. I checked the lower unit oil and did not see any evidence of water in there. Not sure what's going on here. |

Just checking as I should be reay to assemble Monday. In the first pic, the peice sitting on the lower unit is upside down right? The collar goes into the lower unit and then the collar on the old bushing seats into the recess of the new one? I assume it will make more sense when I put it together, just checking. Also, what is the screw in the end of your spline shaft? |

Special - You are correct. Old spacer goes on the lower unit and the new spacer that comes with the conversion kit goes in it's spot. To answer you other question..not sure what the purpose of that screw in the spline is for. All I know is it came out with it, so it will go back in with it. Blue - From what KP said today that's a pretty normal (on a short shank) to have water in that area, which mixed with the grease. As long as there is no evidence of water in the lower unit the seal is good and no need to change it out. On another note... when talking with KP he identified that I have the older reverse plate (09 motor) and I should change swap it out with the newer one. Part should be here in a couple days and will post some pics when I get it all back together. |

Why did he suggest changing the reverse plate? My motor is an 06 but has a Gen 2 lower unit. I put my lower unit back on today. I plan on dropping the powerhead on tomorrow. I will say that I have been running the short motor on am 18" transom for ao long, I am anxious to see the results... |
