Difference in gearing for Pro Drive Gen 3 to Gen 4??
Hello, wondering what the difference in gearing between the two Gen's will do? I have a Gen 3 which is 2 to 1 and the new Gen 4's are 1.52 to 1. Will the Gen 4 have more low end torque? Or top end speed? Like I said I have a newer Pro Drive that's Gen 3 with Pro Drive EFI, shaved heads, ported exhaust, cam and marshmellow exhaust. It's on a 1960 Phowler with Light Marsh Blind. Anyways with just 3 guys in the boat I can get up to about 26-28 mph. Then when I'm hunting, add 4-5 dozen duck decoys 7-8 goose decoys a dog etc. I go to about 10-14 mph. And takes awhile to get on step. I'm really wondering why at Gen 1&2 they were at 1.5 to 1 then Gen 3 at 2 to 1 and now they are going back close to what they were for Gen 4 at 1.52 to 1??
Thanks

Gen 3 will be better with a load. Id stay there and get a new prop.

You will still have plenty of low end power but you will gain a increase in top end speed with the gen 4. The only time I have had an EFI engine somewhat bog with the Gen4 LU was in Thick floaton/lilies, but working the throttle and trim I was able to work it out. I would not hesitate making the switch if the money is available to do so.

He seems to be running pretty good with 3 people with that big boat. He drops off with hunting gear.
Id try a new prop first beings it's the cheapest.

I was in a hurry to type my response about my experience with the Gen 4. With the OP's condition of always carrying heavy weights his best bet is to stick with the Gen 3. What are your RPMS looking like once you hit those low speeds? You are asking a lot from the engine with that load.

Re: Difference in gearing for Pro Drive Gen 3 to Gen 4??
I dont think the gen3 does any better with a load. I am faster all around from switching from a gen3 to a gen4. I am now running 29-30 with a 3 man hunting load and no room in the boat for more stuff, and my boat is no light weight. With the gen 3 I could barely touch 30 with just me in the boat with a modified 3 blade. Having ran both ratios on the same boat, I dont think the gen3 has any advantages over the gen4, especially with a modified engine.

Re: Difference in gearing for Pro Drive Gen 3 to Gen 4??
The engine spun up faster on the gen3 with a heavy load, but speed wise I don't think it gets up any faster than the gen4, and the gen4 still outruns it with a load.
The gen3 prop is just not efficient. A 3 blade cupped by baggy had much better bite and did better with a load, but a stock motor had no chance of turning it. It might could if you took some pitch out and added cup.

Re: Difference in gearing for Pro Drive Gen 3 to Gen 4??
it seems to me that the low gear prop scenario just doesn't work so good on the surface like it does on outboards. If they pitch it enough to make up for the gear, it wont get the bite it needs... I've been away for awhile, knocking off the dust...

With this load and the gen4, it runs damn near as fast as I did unloaded with the gen3

She's running as strong as ever. I cleaned up the intake some, but I'm not sure if you ever saw the pics.
Fred, I'm not sure on the price, I think it's around 1400 or so? You would need to call KP and get a total.

Well no damn wonder, it has a Kawasaki on top, that makes all your post irrelevant.

liked the photos did notice something what is the cover over the air filter. looks like it would do a good job of keeping the rain of filter. have a 42mm mikui on my pro drive but it has just the air cleaner and a fine mess slip on over the filter. where can i get a set up like yours. thanks

Re: Difference in gearing for Pro Drive Gen 3 to Gen 4??
It's the perfect filter for a vertical... http://www.frozenboost.com/high-perform ... -2010.htmlOnly thing you have to do to it is, it has a rubber flange with a grove that the body of the shield goes into. Not sure if it would ever happen but I popped it out and siliconed the groove and put it back and let it cure. You'll see what I'm talking about with on in your hands. The filter is removable and washable as well but you'll probably never need to do that on a boat motor.

Also, the plastic cover makes it waterproof. I have been in down pours and still fires right up, no issues. I drill a small hole in the bottom of three plastic housing so that if any rain got I , it would drain before the filter element.

Yup, I hunted in the pouring rain 2 days in a row and never had any issues with it.

Re: Difference in gearing for Pro Drive Gen 3 to Gen 4??
I am really thinking about selling my 2014 Stock Gen 3 and upgrading to a 37 EFI Gen 4. I am running a 17x54 pro drive boat and would like some more speed and load carrying ability. What would I gain if I would make the swap?

Little more top end due to gear ratio.

My buddy runs a Briggs EFI PD with the Gen4 on a 18x54 Brother Breaux hull just like mine, and it runs great. You will be happy you made the switch.

Can someone chime in how the gen 4 compares speed and load wise with some measurements?
