Then the magnetic brakes are working. Maybe a bearing in the clutch starting to get mad. Hard for me to say replace now or not , but dont wait til duck season to check it out

The singing you hear is the bearing starting to go out. The bearing defect is ok as long as it doesn't generate too much heat. Too much heat will lead to its failure and damage the windings of the clutch. Then its gone. Your good for now, but I would order the new one before it leaves you stranded.

When its gone, it will look similar to this. Notice how the windings are exposed. Too much heat will cause the coating to melt over the windings and thus allow the windings to "touch off" or go straight to ground. Then its done.

Or, like this...

And, don't forget that the bushing goes back on with tapered end toward the engine.

With a singing sound, you are close to getting stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Easy swap...other than having to pull the engine from the tower. Oh yeah...this is what they look like when the bearings are bad...

Tips...
Use some fine grit emery cloth to polish the crankshaft before removing the old one and installing the new one.

PB Blaster to help remove the old one; any lubricant to help install the new one.

Don't bang on the new one with a hammer. I used a piece of 2 x 4 and still used a rubber mallet to lightly tap the new one over the crank.

I torqued the clutch bolt to 48 ft-lbs per the aftermarket manufacturer recommendations.

Xtreme Outdoor Power asked for my crankshaft dimensions (length out of the tub). They sent me a clutch with a washer/spacer to place between the clutch and the PD bushing.

I use the impact and red Loctite. I see a lot more come loose than not...

Pull the flywheel guard...drop a socket or big crescent wrench on the flywheel nut. Easier with two people...but, I did it solo.

The wire mesh guard and screen above the flywheel....pull them off, exposing the nut which holds the flywheel in place. Use it as a backup while tightening the clutch bolt.

48-50 foot pounds is too little torque IMO for a 7/16" diameter fine thread bolt. I see a lot of PD clutch bolts back out and cause the clutch to wobble on the shaft. I use an impact and red Loctite. I'm Marcus with BSD and I approve this message LOL.
