Post 2 blade prop destroying hunting season 37XD
37 XD 100 hours.

A few days ago I bought a new stock 2 blade prop that I’ve heard was comparable to the big blade. So I slapped that bad boy on with love and care, loaded the boat down with gear, and took off to northern Louisiana. The next morning we launch and after getting planed I happen to notice the prop sounded like it was about to take flight from the shaft. It felt like a balance issue but I’m not too sure. Anyways I looked at the sorry fuckers I call my best friends and realized they’re not about to leg it through the timber so I kept going. Once we trailered the boat I noticed a small amount of grease between the prop and bearing housing. I’ve never had any issues with this motor and the grease definitely hasn’t been leaking beforehand. What’s the chances this is a faulty prop I’ve got on my hands ? Thanks for any insight - Blake

A lot of two blades stock out of the box are not balanced. My fat blade was not balanced out of the box. Send it to baggy, get it properly balanced and worked, and you shouldn't have an issue. As far as the grease, most do leak a little bit from vibration and heat. As long as you don't have any grease or water in the lower housing, you should be fine. Remember to grease the lower every 20 hours too, cause some forget to do that frequently

Might be the prop, might just be the time to change the seals

I bought a new gtr40 and it came with a 2 blade, that sob vibrates like hell. I was thinking my motor might not be set up right but from reading stuff on the internet it might be a prop issues.

F that, call your dealer or manufacturer and have them fix your brand new prop. I’d raise holy hell if I spent $300 on a prop that sucked ass and couldn’t be run.

You can do that, and gatortail will send you another prop for a 30 percent restocking fee and it still may or may not be balanced, then after you pay that restocking fee and get a new prop and it is performing the same, you will get it worked. Just seems to make more sense to just get it worked and know that it is right instead of going through that, because I have.

Or just quit buying gatortail props. They should have gotten out of the prop game long ago.

Correct, if I bought an outboard prop that sucked ass I wouldn’t ever buy one again. Neither would anybody else.

Does a big blade or hammer fit a GTRxd 40? I went from a modded HDR to a GTR so I’m pretty clueless when it comes to GTR, I know I was tired of working on that POS hdr!

I agree with blue sky, get a big blade or hammer and be done with it bro. Those are better props

Here's a surprise.

When I ordered my 40XD, I did not want a Fat Blade because I was told they are comparable to BPS's Hammer. I have a small, light boat. 16.5x46, .100 gauge. Mine was delivered with the Gator Tail's standard 2-blade (not the Fat Blade), made by Powertech. I think it's marked CA57, 10 Pitch.

Water is low this season on Lake O and I destroyed the prop in short order in sand. Even destroyed, and at 11 1/8", it still ran well enough and I had no problem holding 30-31 with two guys and a hunt load. Knowing I needed another prop, I ordered the BPS big blade for the 40XD. It arrived in Mercury packaging.

Even torn up and missing a lot of metal, the Powertech from GT was a lot heavier than the Big Blade. I figured the Big Blade would blow the doors off the Powetech at the same pitch and diameter, but being much lighter.

I was shocked when the Big Blade was a full 2mph slower than the powertech, with virtually identical holeshot.

So don't discount the GT props by Powertech----I just ordered a second one, and the Big Blade will be a spare.

Also:

Blueprinting a balancing a mudboat prop is about the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. They're going to hit stuff. It's akin to balancing a lawnmower blade.

Balancing a surface drive prop is an excellent idea. Big blades tend to be more consistent, but try running a balanced and stock on on the same motor, back to back. The difference is very noticeable with the gt props, and sometimes is with big blades. Call it ridiculous if you want. No one is making you pay for it.

I didn't say it doesn't matter. I have run blueprinted and balanced props on my fishing boat. Labbed props run great. But I don't plan on hitting anything with it every time I run it.

My point was that it's a fleeting benefit for this application.

Do you polish the tread on your truck tires before driving to the boat ramp?

Saying balancing a prop doesn't make a difference is not true. Balancing a prop makes a massive difference on vibration and wear and tear, not to mention performance. Maybe don't run in the oyster shells all the time if you can help it lol

I would just appreciate a prop that won’t tear the motor up if possible.

Seems the mfg should pedal good wares.

Three blades have lot less vibration but a lot more tiller torque and arnt as good in the mud. Might be an option for
You

Three blades can and do vibrate just as much, it just has a higher frequency so not as obnoxious. Can be just as bad on the bearings and frame.

And tiller torque on my three blade wasn't nearly as bad as one of the 2 blades I had when I was finished putting my engine together. Every prop setup is different.

You are right, and every hull acts different with different setups

I'm spinning the big blade at 4450-4500 for maximum speed; any higher and it's just false rpms. Meaning, more rpms but no gain in speed. It's 1.5-2mph slower on top than the Powertech.

When the destroyed GT/Powertech prop was new, I was gaining speed all the way up to about 4650- 4700. With it worn out, I am gaining speed all the way to the rev limiter but the speed is a lot less than when the prop was new. It's not difficult to get it on the rev limiter; it's lost a lot of blade area.

If you are "Glade" from BPS, I must say that your customer service is excellent. I had to send a prop back to you for a replacement and you, and your staff, were great.

Believe me, I thought the Big Blade was going to be a winner for me. I have no problem running 33 and change and sometimes 34 with the Powertech so I had really high hopes for the Big Blade considering its weight. I'm going to keep running it and see what happens.
