On opening day I decided to use muddy brackish water instead of gear oil in my Gen 2 lower unit. Unfortunately it didn't work out. As far as I can tell I now need the bearings replaced on both the upper and lower shafts. Is it possible to just swap out the bearings or do you have to buy the whole shaft assembly?

call pd and ask, they'll know for sure.

You can send your lower unit to PD and let them rebuild it would be best. Upgrade if possible.

Wilson, IMO the gen 2 lower was the best gear ratio lower they had. I considered upgrading my lower, still Gen 2, but the outdrive would be grease filled rather than oil filled. But I ended up selling my rig and never did it. The grease filled lowers helped better to keep water out.

My upper and lower have been converted to grease, but the knuckle is still filled with oil.

I don't even know what lower unit I have, but I know it's 2:1 and every other time I take it out it takes about 10 shots or so of thick blue marine grease.

I have never been a stickler for checking the oil level in a lower unit. I usually break something or have it serviced before there is an issue. the pd shop is just down the street for me, so it's not an option for everybody.
