Post subject:  PD Gen 2 Broken Gears?

I have dual 2007 36 PD's. The gears in one of my lower units are broken and unfortunately are no longer available from PD or Curtis who manufactured the LU's for PD. I hit something hard in the river and a terrible sound (grinding gears) started. My other motor stopped spinning the prop (seems like the clutch went out) I was able to limp home using the motor with the busted up gears.
I had an insurance adjuster come out to check the damage and he claims to have talked to a PD dealer who said that he has never heard of gears breaking on a PD. I have a hard time believing that to be true.
Have any of you ever had or heard of gear damage on a PD motor from hitting something? My gen 2 gears don't appear to be made nearly as stout as the gears on the Gen 4 lower units.

Only time I've seen the gears damaged was when the bolts in the knuckle got sheared and the knuckle was able to separate, allowing the gears to chew each other up. They are pretty stout, would be pretty hard to shear if they were meshed together properly.

I agree with cb.

Its HARD for those gears to break, unless the knuckle isn't bolted together properly or if the bolts are loose / sheared.

Are you 100% sure its the gears?

Unless water got in there and just kept running it and wore them out

Yes, there a couple of teeth sheared off on the gear that is up inside the lower unit. No water and good gear oil. I don't abuse my gear and am real particular about maintenance. Really frustrating that I can't track down replacement gears and will have to buy an entire new lower unit for $2,300 and a new prop since the gen 2's are threaded.

there was a place we dealt with a while back that was going to help us out, but we found an older lower to get my buddy back on water. Zimmer gear, check them out. Not sure if there still around, but they had lots of stuff.

Unfortunately, the Gen 2 gears are no longer available. I have been communicating with Travis down at PD via email and that is what he has told me. The motor is 12 years old and I know that they have made improvements during that time frame.

I've broke a tooth in a lower unit. probly a gen 2, it was a few years ago. it just chewed it up and I ran it for a while before getting it repaired.

sucks that they don't have parts, but I would think getting parts for any of these older surface drives is gonna be hard to find, since they have evolved so much over the years.

sink that boat and claim it on your insurance, then go get a new one!!!!!! lol

Would think they'd total it out and replace it if you have insurance.

I do have insurance, with Progressive. They sent out an adjuster who is bound and determined to say that it is just wear and tear which wouldn't be covered. He is argumentative and acts like an expert even though he has never worked a surface drive claim.
I religiously change out both the engine oil and lower unit oil but he questioned that. We will see where it ends up but it has not been a good experience to this point. Thankfully I don't have a complete loss and a large claim, because I couldn't imagine how tough it would be to get anywhere with them. I have since googled Progressive boat insurance and they don't get very good reviews. Sounds like it is always a fight and the fight never seems to go in the favor of the customer.

You should get with Geico's Boat insurance.
I don't remember the exact name off the top of my head, but I've had nothing but good experiences with them.
