 GTR 40xd prop talk
I’ve been running a few props and I figured I can post on here the results for your viewing. Stock GTR 2 blade - good hole shot and load carrying with a top end speed of 30 to 31 mph. I noticed a decent amount of vibration. When idling, the motor would shake a little side to side.
Same GTR 2 blade balanced, polished, semi sharpened and cup added. Far better performance all around. Top end speed 32 to 33 MPH and the vibration is gone. When idling the side to side motion of motor is gone. One side of prop was working far more than the other when stock. I’m very impressed with this version of the prop. I added double cup.
Stock GTR 3 blade - zero vibration with a top end speed of 32 to 33 mph. The prop gets hull on step in very low speeds. The ability to carry a load is not as good as the 2 blade but still good enough to use as needed. This prop has good hole shot. It clearly is a good fishing prop and the lack of vibration will allow your motor to last longer.
Mercury 3 blade worked and stock - I got 34 to 35 out of this prop but the hole shot is complete junk and it struggled to carry a decent load. I’m not a fan of this prop at all on a stock 40. They do seem to work well on worker modded motors.
All props tested with a cut skeg. After cutting my skeg, I gained 1 to 2 mph on 2 blade and 2 mph on 3 blade. I’m sending my 3 blade to be worked next week and we shall see how that runs. I’m most likely running my 3 blade prop until duck season. The 2 blade is for duck season in serious tough conditions as well as heavy loads.

 Re: GTR 40xd prop talk
Can you post a pic of how you cut the skeg please?
I'm trying to decide what to do with my 2 blade prop that has a ding in it. If it's not too much, I'd like to get it balanced, sharpened, etc like you say above. I'm also not sure if I should add cup and if so, how much. Also, who did your prop work?
Thanks!

 Re: GTR 40xd prop talk
Corners were cut with that prop. If you notice, you can still see the balancing marks from Either a grinding wheel or a reckless job with a sanding belt. Baggys is back open now in full force. If y’all need contact info for the shop feel free to pm me. I’ll be in the shop a lot next week and will be happy to help any of y’all with whatever work needs to be done on wheels

 Re: GTR 40xd prop talk
Those are some serious speeds !
I was going up and down river with a brand new stock 2 blade and the best I could hit was 27.5 for a few seconds. Granted it was very windy and a nasty current. Great speeds, good write up!

 Re: GTR 40xd prop talk
I really like to have my 3 blade on when running my jug lines or crab nets. It is so smooth at low speeds and can run on step smoothly at just 9 mph. It has a great low speed idle.

 Re: GTR 40xd prop talk
I'm running 30mph at 4300-4500rpms with the ca57. I want to send it to Baggy and order another prop in the meantime. I know i want another 2 blade, but I'm still undecided on which one. I noticed gatortail is out of stock on the merc 2 blade and was wondering if they stopped carrying them, and would it even be a wise choice?

 Re: GTR 40xd prop talk
The merc 2 is a fast blade but, just like a big blade, they crack near the hub a lot. For 2 blades, they are very quick though

 Re: GTR 40xd prop talk
Is there any kind of warranty on the Merc 2 blade, since this is known to happen? I mean obviously you can't send back a prop that has been beat to hell, but it seems like "cracking around the hub" would be a manufacturer defect.

 Re: GTR 40xd prop talk
Nope, props don’t have warranty because if they did, every time someone hit something they would be sending it back for a new one. I guess with mud boat wheel designs, everything is trail and error

 Re: GTR 40xd prop talk
Almost a 2mph gain. Like 1.8 to be exact. I "think" my rpms were a little higher also. I say it was worth doing.
