Post subject:  Re: 23hp S.W.O.M.P. & WeldBilt 1642 crawdad

motor came today!
first off let me start with the shipping. motor arrived quick but the crate was rough. one of the sides had actually broke and chipped the paint on the corner of the cav plate (no biggie did not affect performance). talked to Jake about it and he said something about sending another one so we'll see. the motor its self is amazingly well built. they thought of almost everything. the tube frame is super nice and really strong. the 360 transom mount is nice too, when you spin it into the boat it locks into place so theres no need to strap it down.

so we set it up and headed to the boat launch stopping on the way and adding 5w-30 synthetic oil. once at the ramp i fired it up for the first time. she purred like a kitten. however i noticed the tiny tach wasnt working. called jake and told him my problem and he gave me some diff options to try but i didnt have the tools i need to try the fix before i went out. he said he check with tiny tach but either way theyd make it right. (again no biggie i have a history of being the 1 in 1000 who manages to get a defective part all the time)

so we head out, the weld bilt is an all welded .80 thick hull with a flat bottom and a bow kinda like a skiff. great for timber and it was almost as if it had been built for the 23 swomp. with me (208) and my buddy (185), 2 1/2 gallons of fuel, a battery, and a small tool kit we mannaged to run 18mph in heavy winds. we did hit 20 a few times but 18 was constant. im pretty sure we could get 23 out of it on calm water.motor got on step in no time at just half throttle, at wot it almost threw me out of the boat the first time. i wasnt expecting that much power.

i am very happy with the 23 swomp and the 1642 crawdad. even with all the hiccups with the shipping and the tiny tach i gotta say backwaterinc has got a product that all the other lt manufacturers should be affraid of. got some pics and video. ill post the video once i get it off the gopro. its not cooperating at this moment.

nice little rig. sounds like they are good at customer svc., although it sounds like the shipper effed up the crate and scratched the motor.

yeah i think the could have prolly crated it up a little better but the shipping company realy didnt treat it like i would have if i were able to go get it.

prolly take some shit for it but heres a pic of the gps. still trying to edit all the video into one clip

Real good looking rig there. Go ahead and get you a grab bar so you can hit it wide open! :D

If you don't mind me asking how much do these boats retail for? And are they slick bottom. Got a buddy that just got his hands on a 24 horse longtail and he's in the market for a little boat, could be right up his alley.

i like it alot. i got this one off the lot but if you want .100 thick hull or slick bottom you can get that custom ordered. i didnt feel like waiting and dont need a slick hull. however i you want a true flat the narrowest width they have in 15' hulls and up is 48" so if you wanted narrower youd have to custom order. i like the crawdad cause of its width and the pointed bow. it is also rated as a comercial vessel with the only flotation being under the floor. closed cell not spray in so if you wanted to remove it its as simple as drillin out some rivets

performance update. got a new working tinytach and got a chance to run it so i figured id post some numbers. wot out of the water its running 4080 rpm, wot with just me (205lb) 3800rpm, add one more guy (260lb) and a med cooler 3740rpm. didnt think to take the gps to check speeds but we were moving pretty good. im very happy with the backwaterinc swomp

Looks good! Do you think a 16x48 crawdad would hold a 27 hp back water engine weight wise?

Well, by him saying it can handle a 35... don't you think a 27 is good too?

It would def handle a 27. I wouldn't be afraid to run a 35 on a 1642. I did learn today that heavy rain and high winds are the enemy tho.
