 MY NEW GATOR TAIL- HELP
Just picked up my new GT Rig this weekend. Had it in the water for the first time today. I am brand new to this site and mud boats.
My Rig: 1754 GT Boat with Hunt Deck 2012 GTR Aluminum trailer Speeds: ??? Need some help...
I hope this is the right spot to post stuff like this. Some of ya'll can be a little rough if things are a litte out of place.
There isnt anyone around where I am that run a mud boat who I know and can talk too. I need some advice on how to trim this thing out. I didnt get any help from GT except trim all the way down when using reverse. THAT WAS IT!! So the rest I guess Im on my own. A little dissapointed in the speeds and the lack of time spent from the GT folks. Also when I put in in foward, sometimes it dies. Other than that I love the setup.
So if anyone could post some tips for trimming this thing out I would appreciate it. I live in Aransas Pass Texas. Cell number is 361-449-5320. If anyone is around here or could help me out a little that would be great.
Thanks in advance Vince

Re: MY NEW GATOR TAIL- HELP
Trim it to run half the prop out of water. And bump your idel rpms up to 1200

Re: MY NEW GATOR TAIL- HELP
You can also bend the little tab with the spring, that controls how low your rpms drop when under a load ie engaging clutch.

Re: MY NEW GATOR TAIL- HELP
Craig, it seems like a lot of folks have been having the issue with the motor killing when you engage the clutch. The last few guys with the problem did not have the governed idle spring. Did GT do away with that part on their motors? If so, what was the logic behind that?

Re: MY NEW GATOR TAIL- HELP
Thank you Quackconsumer. I appreciate the advice. I am going to do what you said. When I am running in deep water should there be a rooster tail or or is that trimmed up to high?
Craig. I just figured maybe someone would take a little time to explain some things. Maybe it would run and adjust itself.. Guess you dont expect much and neither should I

Re: MY NEW GATOR TAIL- HELP
Almost every new stock motor I've ever seen was idled too low, because they have never been put under load. One reason the throttle response is crap until you get it set right, then it's just less crappy till you get a mikuni. Lol

Re: MY NEW GATOR TAIL- HELP
Thanks for all the replies. I have done all the research I could. Little hard in South texas. Gator tail seemed like the best so thats what I went with. I agree that I need to spend some time behind the tiller and plan on doing so. I will figure it out somehow... Adjusting the idle now. Then going to research the carb that was mentioned by autogateman Thanks Again

Re: MY NEW GATOR TAIL- HELP
A easy way to know were to trim. If you have a gps use it to help you learn. Take of wide open trim up slowly all the while you should gain speed as soon as you stop gaining speed pop it back down one tap and that is it. Once you been in it a while you will learn buy the sound and feel of the boat what's the sweet spot. As for as idle you may have to speed it ip a notch you can idle it up to around 1450 to 1550. The little tab they were Talking about don't exist on a Cdi motor!! Good luck and enjoy

Re: MY NEW GATOR TAIL- HELP
Thanks for all of yalls support. I did adjust my idle up like you said. Havent tried it under a load yet. Couldnt find the "tab" but now I know why... Camo- Road trip planning in progress. I would like to head up that way that weekend. I guess I didnt ask enough questions. I was more worried about maintenance questions. They are always busy and I dont like to bother people. Thanks Craig for the PM

Re: MY NEW GATOR TAIL- HELP
The motor is set on the middle hole on the transom bracket. Will it help if I move to the top? It doesnt trim out like a regular boat so I guess Im not to sure where that optimal spot is. Hopefully I can meet up with camo and he can help me out with the idle problem and probly expalin all these frustrating questions...

Re: MY NEW GATOR TAIL- HELP
I would try running it at all three positions to determine which gives you the best performance.
You want to be able to trim up high enough so that you begin to lose speed and gain RPM's...then drop back down a little.

Re: MY NEW GATOR TAIL- HELP
IN the middle hole is fine, What terry is saying is while your running watch your GPS and trim up till you stop gaining speed and bump it down a notch that will be your optimal speed for your rig. These things are a learning curve and it'll take time but just like anything else it can be figured out, if you make the ride you'll definitly earn some experience points over here. Hope to see you there

Re: MY NEW GATOR TAIL- HELP
Also get you another bolt just like the one that's in your transom bracket, make sure to get a grade 8 bolt. Put the old bolt in the bottom and leave it there. Take the new one and drill a small hole in the threads and put a pin in it so you can use that pin in the hole where your set up runs the best. If you get in a bind pull the quick pin and let the motor drop to the bottom hole. With the pin in the bottom hole you can trim down deeper which will help you get out of thick nasty crap.

Re: MY NEW GATOR TAIL- HELP
Pipelinefish, Don't feel like your the only one. Take'mgator owned his GTR for a long time before he learned to drive.
A few things to do if you want full potential : * Tiller Time (drive it as much as you can) * dog that Mutha out!! (It's made by the people that use it; not by some engineering firm that don't know what abuse they will take) * WIde Open Trottle usually works best
Hope that helps!!!
With Love, Uncle J

Re: MY NEW GATOR TAIL- HELP
Alright.. Took the GT out a few times this weekend to do some duck and fish hunting. People down here dont know what to think about this boat. I even got stopped by a local cop so he could see what it was. The only people I ever see around where I hunt and fish is an occasional air boat guide. I took all of ya'lls advice and applied it! Got the trim down! I think... Deep Water by myself, beer, and a few redfish. 29.1 Deep Water Me, Girlfriend, 6doz deeks and all my gear 26. 3 I ran in shallow water by myself but was too scared to look at my gps. It did seem faster though. I love this boat!!!! Thanks everyone for their patients and support. Vince Smith

Im still trying to get my boat figured out but Im getting alot more comfortable with it now. Would like to meet someone that knows a little about these things. Wanted to plan a trip to SETX to maybe meet up with a few of yall and try to get Camo to work on my motor. Thanks

Re: MY NEW GATOR TAIL- HELP
I'm in the same boat but yes I also researched everything I knew to research and it's funny when some candy ass tells you that you didn't. About like any motor these days, they gotta be opened up to breath better. I'm about to start working on mine. You a pipeliner? Just guessing from your name. Where you work?

Re: MY NEW GATOR TAIL- HELP
Pipelinefish, i'm guessing you don't hunt Aransas pass because of all the no prop zones down there? I've done alot of duck hunting down there all with airboats. I sure wish i could find some good duck hunting down in that area where i could use my MM. Also when you and Coe, and Eljefe get together for a ride, hit me up i'd like to go. i live about an hour NW of Houston.
