Post subject: | Tracker Grizzly 1648.. What mud motor? |
I have a Tracker Grizzly 1648 all weld with a 30 horse mercury. Im ready to get rid of the outboard and go to a mud motor. I understand that a modified v hull is not the best for a mud motor, but I do know that a mud motor will take that 1648 Tacker Grizzly a lot more places than my 30 horse outboard will. And I also like the modified v for running deeper water like we have on some of the lakes here in Florida. I hunt in Florida and am tired of clearing my prop and stopping to take weeds off of it. Plus I want to run decently shallow. I got pods for a Christmas present made by Beavertail so my boat should be more stable now. I asked for the small size designed for 14' to 16' foot boats, but I received the medium size made for 17' to 18' foot boats. When I got them I took them out to my boat and held them where they would be attached and they did not interfere with the turning and handling of my outboard. I think the mediums will fit my 1648 fine. I also like them being bigger as I would assume that they would hold more weight up and be more stable. So, I have a couple of questions... I am going to wait till after this duck season to get my mud motor, and I have decided on a 35 hp.. I have read many forums and seen where a surface drive is not good with pods, but I have also seen where they are alright if set up right. I would rather have a surface drive but if pods are a real problem with a surface drive, I wouldn't mind having a 35 hp long tail as long as it still pushes me fast. I hear they are a pain to drive though. So, will these larger pods interfere with turning on a surface drive if thats the route I take? Or could we set up this boat with a surface drive? I just need some advice dealing with what motor for my boat before I install these pods and purchase a mud motor. |

You will be aggravated right off the back with that boat and a surface drive. If you are set on a surface drive, don't get a heavy weighted one. |

Medium pods make it a pain wit longtails! Won't be able to swing tail side to side... Longtails aren't hard to run if dialed in correctly If its up high, it's coming to the ground |

I personally would sell the tracker 1648 with the outboard and start over. That being said , I have seen the 27 longtail and the 35 longtail move the 1648mv pretty good. There is a guy on toho that has a 35 gd surface drive that looks to move around 30. I would not put the pods on the boat with the longtail, you wont need them and it will hurt performance. Good luck and let us know how it works out. |

The pods on my 1548 work great with my 20hp Longtail and Weldbilt boat. I run right at 20 solo with a worked over 9x4 prop turning it 4150rpm I say if they help float the motor and are installed right, go for it. Different story with a surface drive. |

Thanks but mine runs fine. I have had several other props on this setup and with more pitch I kill my load carrying capacity. I can carry 3 and gear at 15-16mph at 3800RPM. With the 9x6, I had less top end loaded and unloaded. I'm working with 20hp. Momentum is the key. I'm not afraid to turn this Honda 4500+ RPM, folks in the carting world are running this same engine 5K and up on stock internals with no ill effects. I believe the sweet spot for this thing is 4000-4200, not 3600. Turning it that slow lugs the shit out of it and you can tell the difference just by listening to it. Sounds much happier at 4K. |

Probably not, you'd be surprised. The valves float at about 5200 on this thing. I don't run a governor and have hit a log and knocked the tiller out of my hand running WOT lol. Don't honestly know how many hours are on it. I've put 55 on it in a year and have had zero engine trouble minus some fuel delivery issues that weren't engine related. They're always overlooked I guess because they don't make many of the bigger hp engines but the Hondas are tough as nails and as reliable as anything I've seen on the water. |

That hull with a surface drive will do okay. I have a 15ft mod v with a 35gtr and it gets the job done. Do I want and need a true mud boat yes but this fit the budget at the time and hey it gets me where I want to go hunting except if there's a sand bar haha Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Had a grizzly tracker 1648 and put a 35 mud buddy on it. Ran it for three months and sold the hull. Do yourself a favor and sell your hull, i would say with your hull your handicape is at 70% easy. |

I have been looking for some information... I also have a 2011 tracker grizzly 1648... I understand that the boat inst the best but I dont really wanna get rid of it. Im 22 and just getting out of school. I dont really have the money to buy a brand new setup. mud boats arent cheap. I need to know what size surface drive to go with. Go devil seems to be the lightest and most reliable from what ive read. The boat is rated for a 50hp outboard. However I hear the the mud motors are a lot heavier. The guy from go devil said i could get away with there 27hp model. I hear that the 35s are just to heavy and the motor wash will come over the back of the boat. Anyone out there have a 1648 tracker with a surface drive.... please help! And where can you find used mud motors im up in NY |

Not to mention, i have an alweld 16x48 with a 35 GDSD straight from the dealer, with a short transom and water doesnt come over the back. I am gunna be slapping a 36 prodrive on there, which is heavier, and im still positive it will be good to go. |

The tracker grizzly line of boats IMO is ridiculous in how much they weigh compared to a custom boat like gator trax Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Get a 35. I have a gtr 35 on a boat smaller than that and it's fine, just have to be smart about how you drive, I've taken a few waves over the back and side from acting like an idiot but never enough to even turn the bilge on. Now if I swamped the back every time I stopped then my boat would def sink. Just be smart about it Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Just make sure the pods are set 1-2" below the bottom of the rest of the hull and youll be fine. |
