23 hp copperhead on 1544 venom outdoor hull
Got a chance to run my new rig today.
Its a 23hp copperhead on a 1544 venom hull. The hull has 20" sides, triple tapered sport chine, 8" hunt deck. The whole hull is .125 thickness.
Results: 2 people (me a 200, my wife at $$$) light gear load, 6 gallons of fuel, a few tools, big battery. 20-21mph in windy choppy water. 24mph in smooth water and calm wind. At some point it bumped 26 and 27 in some shallow pond. Gps had 27 for its max mph.
It idles in the water at 1300rpms but the motor doesnt sound like its too high. My best speeds come around 3970 to 4000rpms
Still breaking it in. Just rolled over 3hrs when i loaded it. It got faster the more time i put on it.

I like the rig for what it is. A small reliable rig. Meant for me and my wife to hunt out of and maybe a 3rd person. Its not gonna break the bank or gonna be hard to get unstuck if the tide goes out. Still need to put more hours on it to see how bad the manual trim and no clutch is. But for now its fine.

Clean little rig . Good size it seems for that motor.

If you're used to running a Longtail the manual trim and direct drive won't bother you. I rarely ever mess with the trim on my GD. You're boat will be a little bit more load sensitive but I think you'll be pleased with it if you keep your expectations realistic. For what you have planned, that's a jam-up setup. Good to meet you and your wife today. Glad to locate another member right in my back yard. Be sure y'all holler if you ever need anything over there.

Re: 23 hp copperhead on 1544 venom outdoor hull
Good rig! What can I expect with the 23 if I put it on my 1648 grizzly? I know it is not a great hull but that's what I have, I usually hunt alone, don't need much speed. I've driven LT's for years but want an easier option.

Hey Glades not trying to stalk you on the forum but saw your comment and figured i would chime in. 1648 grizzly would not perform well with any surface drive. the mod v bottom doesn't perform well with surface drives. just thought id let you know.

Re: 23 hp copperhead on 1544 venom outdoor hull
Thanks, Will. Been driving longtails for near 30 years on a succession of jon boats, first one riveted, the next two all-welded...gets there and back. My choice right now (since I cannot get another hull) on my 1648 grizzly is between the 23 or 28 Copperhead or the 26.5/35 swomp longtail. I usually hunt alone so don't need speed, and I am used to no clutch/reverse. Seen a bunch of SD'w with hulls like mine and they are ok with big block. Smash, that is about the same as I got with my 27 MB LT on my 1648, so not worth the extra cost of the SD in that comparison.

Re: 23 hp copperhead on 1544 venom outdoor hull
Thanks, I have realized that a longtail is the better option for me in my marsh; the LT is also better for my budget. Call me a dinosaur.

Anymore information or updates on the rig? Quality and durability seem good? Motor going strong? Im about to pull the trigger on the same rig, any info is appreciated
