Backwater 37 SWOMP Lite & 1752 Alweld Mud Hull
This is going to be my initial review. I've only got 30 minutes or so of run time with the rig but I know several are interested in this motor so I'll get this initial review started and build upon it as the rig gets more run time. First impressions are what I expected. The design is awesome. Build quality is excellent. Definitely a motor that anyone would be proud to spend their money on and hang it off the back of their boat. I know it says SWOMP Lite, but this frame is PLENTY stout! All the necessary bracing is there and the elimination of the universal joint is just one less "wear part". Also, no universal joint means there's no loss of power due to a change in the direction of motion. More power to the prop! All big block SWOMP Lite frames are going to come standard with a 7/8" driveshaft and a hex prop. The Alweld Mud Hull is a good looking boat. At the advice of Jake, I went with the 1752 and I'm glad I did. The welds look good. The non-skid coating on the interior is nice. And the wide open floor plan is just what I wanted. The boat has a smooth bottom except for one runner that runs along the center. The boat will slide just enough to make it fun! Pretty cool feeling to be standing up running a longtail wide open, hammer through a turn and do a little sliding. I'm anxious to see how the hull holds up but nothing I've seen so far tells me I'm going to have any trouble. The trailer is awesome. Period. It's all galvanized steel to prevent rusting which is nice and I much prefer the steel over aluminum due to some of the rougher roads I end up on. The nicest feature on these trailers is the use of torsion axles over the traditional straight axle and leaf spring set up. The result is an incredibly smooth ride and the boat boat sits low to the ground which makes launching and retrieving in shallow water much easier. I ran the rig today for maybe 30 minutes at a local lake. All deep water, no current, mostly light chop. My boat is a short transom and the frame is the shorter 65" model. The clearance between the frame and the boat when swinging the motor in and out of the boat is tight but no issues. When I first fired the motor up, I couldn't believe how smooth it was. Motor idles at like 1500 RPMs out of the water and 1100 in the water. Wide open RPMs with just me and the wife were between 4000 and 4100. Maneuvering around at both slow and high speeds was very easy. The cavitation plate needed no adjustment in my opinion. The rig performed even better than I hoped it would. Again I was running in deep water with no current and a light chop, with me and the wife. My Speedometer app on my phone held a constant 25 mph. I checked the accuracy of the app in my truck on the way to the lake and it was dead on. I'm expecting the top speed to pick up 1, maybe 2 mph once the motor is broken in. Overall I'm VERY happy with the entire rig. I plan on updating this thread as time goes on and the hours go up. https://youtu.be/Cb8V_esifIMhttps://youtu.be/hZRyb3yXD7ASent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Nice looking rig. The backwater looks like a great unit and I have heard good things about them. Keep us informed after you have some more time on it.

Re: Backwater 37 SWOMP Lite & 1752 Alweld Mud Hull
Finally! Thank you Frank! Looks great! I guess the lite frame needs a versa mount- will it also come with a clamp on style where needed? Noticed the four adjustment points and your model is on the rearmost balance point. How hard was it to push down to raise the prop out of the water? With my 26.5 efi and versa mount I had to put "inboard" because the way my hull creates white water in the back and also because my 59" drive needed to be in the forward most hole as I found that the easiest for both raising the prop and turning. Could not see where the grease fitting is on the shaft? I believe you said that the prop is the hex hub style with no threads? Is there a stop bumper like on the conventional motors? I also think as you do that there should be a slight speed increase with break in of motor. I'd love to see how it does on a true flat hull or a 1844/1848! Please update when you can! Looks like a winner with applicability to the lower HP motors as well!

Frank, sorry to be a pest. How does the lite 35/37 compare with the full frame 35/37?? Pros/cons?? What other hulls would recommend as a "best fit" for either motor? The GD boats are heavy, wonder how they run with BW big blocks?

Re: Backwater 37 SWOMP Lite & 1752 Alweld Mud Hull
Driving the boat, I don't notice a difference in handling. Performance/speed is better. Slow speed maneuvering is easier due to the motor being heavier on the engine side than the cage game model. I don't see why these motors wouldn't perform well on most any boat.

Re: Backwater 37 SWOMP Lite & 1752 Alweld Mud Hull
That is good news! The reason I asked about the bump stop is, once I got my motor dialed in, and balanced forward, easing turning-lifting, and getting the prop out of "whitewater", the bump stop is great when I am idling around picking up decoys for instance. How is this achieved on the lite model? Do you think this lite platform will likely be the future replacement for all HP models by BW?? From the mfg. viewpoint, seems eliminating the U-joint and the full frame, albeit requiring a beefier shaft and motor shaft base/lockup will be, somewhat of a cost reduction, resulting in an even more reliable unit.

Now I get it! Thanks! I love these refinements, I am turning 64, so anything to make the longtail less of a burden, I welcome! I am right handed but after all these years I think my left arm and hand have won out! All the best, hope you have a good ducking season!

Still haven't had the time to run the boat anymore but all of the rigging is about done so I thought I'd update everyone with a few pictures.

Speeds on an almost exact boat were 26-27 . That was twice , setx mud run and caddo . I'd expect frank to see 26-28 by the time she's broke in.

Re: Backwater 37 SWOMP Lite & 1752 Alweld Mud Hull
Just a little update.
The RPMs have changed a good bit for whatever reason. At idle the motor now holds 850-950 RPMs. This makes slow speed maneuvering a breeze. Also at wide open throttle with just me, the motor is turning 4450-4500 RPMs. She is absolutely HUMMING! I hope to check GPS speeds again by next weekend but I can tell there has been an obvious increase in speed since I first got the motor.
Last weekend my boat with 3 big guys and gear out ran a 1748 Phowler with a 35hp Mud Buddy carrying 2 guys. Guys at the boat ramp were freaking out over how fast this longtail rig is. I've had multiple groups that we've taken on hunts this year remark how unbelievably fast this rig is. And it is on plane in like 2 boat lengths. It's really remarkable.
I've also had 6 men and guns and a couple blind bags in my boat and had no trouble hopping on pad and running across a lake on plane. I love this rig and I welcome anyone to come to West TN and run it for themselves just to see how well this thing performs. Stay tuned for updated GPS speeds to hopefully come in the next week or so.

Re: Backwater 37 SWOMP Lite & 1752 Alweld Mud Hull
I got freed up this afternoon and took my boat out to GPS it. Almost decided against it due to the conditions. Went out on a public lake so there'd be no current to help or hinder speeds. Conditions were less than ideal. Light rain, wind, and some slight chop. Boat jumped to 25 mph like it was nothing then hit 26 at the end of the video. I think with better conditions I could maybe hit 27. Regardless, for a longtail on a 1752, I am beyond pleased. Especially considering the speeds don't fall off too terribly much with a 2 or 3 man load. https://youtu.be/9BUydPugUqY

Re: Backwater 37 SWOMP Lite & 1752 Alweld Mud Hull
Frank, wonder how much more $ lite frame 37 is compared to the full frame? Do you foresee the lite frame being made for the 26.5 and/or the 35? BW has not updated or advertised the 37 lite on their website.

Re: Backwater 37 SWOMP Lite & 1752 Alweld Mud Hull
The Lite frame is the same cost as the cage frame. The Lite frame for the 37 fits the 35 too since they are the same block. And from my understanding the Lite frame for the 35/37 has additional mounting holes that are compatible with the 26.5 Kohler.

Thank you, Frank! Hope I can make it up your way some day...are you far from Reelfoot lake? Lot of fowling history there.
