Post 1981 16' Bass Tracker converted mud rig
Hey ya'll wanted to get your thoughts on something. I'm saving for a shallow water rig. The reality is all I can afford is a budget beater. I know the headache that comes with a budget beater boat so I really just want something new and hesitate when it comes to anything else.

I'm up in salt lake and there's not shit for any used deals up here. I found a 16' 1981 Bass Tracker full aluminium hull with the old school orange stripes. The guy already ripped the console out, put brand new carpet in it and converted it to tillar.

I was gonna buy it, weld pods on it then put the new 40 EFI Go Devil SD on (not the FNR model). Paint the motor black and restore the vintage bass tracker look. Thought that'd be badass.

Found out the boat was riveted and backed out on closing on it. Initially I guess I thought it was welded. Having second thoughts, not all rivited boats are trash, anybody ever had one of these old bass trackers? Bass Tracker I, II or III.

Hopefully before Christmas I should have around $10k that ive stashed away these last few months for a boat, I want that 40 EFI. Wont finance anything my pops would never let me hear the end of it.

Don’t add pods to a SD rig.

For 10k you can get a used hull and motor (won’t be a 40, but can get a 35) that will last longer and will perform better because it’s a hull and motor designed for each other.

I'm pretty set on the 40. I've had and ran MM's of all sorts and dont want to jack with load performance probs. Being up here I'll lose around 20% performance wise compared to what I'd get at sea level. Anything carbed will have to be jetted for altitude.

I want max load performance even if it means buying the 40 and slapping it on a clunker for a season or two. There's not as much decent quality used rigs up here like back in the south, a bunch of homemade mud motors on 14' jons. It'd cost $1000-$1500 to pay someone to haul a boat across the country..

First, wrong forum.

Second, sounds like you are going to do this no matter what anyone else says, so why even start the thread in the first place?

My brother built that same combo 2 yrs ago and still runs it. 1981 1648 tracker converted to mudboat. Mildly warmed 35 gdsd. It's still a good boat today. He put a lot of time into it to save some money. 5 k total to build boat, motor and trailer. The only downside we have found is top end speed. The front gets sticky at 28mph. Put 3 guys in back and it's goes a little faster just keeping the front from grabbing water. I say go for it

Thanks for the input. I didnt mean to post in the wrong forum. I'm not going to do this no matter what anybody else says thats the reason I posted in the first place to see if anyones done it before.
