Post subject:  29 Kawi on 1754 Grizzly Tracker Question

Need some help guys...We have a 29 hp EFI Kawasaki Longtail on a 1754 Tracker Grizzly. Seems that the boat has gotten slower over the last year. GPS this morning was at 8 mph with motor running at 3000 rpm full throttle. Three guys, dog and dekes. The boat does have a 3/4" treated floor and a low profile truck box in it. We just changed oil, filters, plugs, new throttle cable a few days ago and reset the low end rpm to 1600 and high end to 3900 out of the water. The engine sounds like a sewing machine at full song in and out of the water. Prop and shaft were brand new last season. Motor has 110 hours on it. Shouldn't we atleast see 15mph from this set-up or is this just simply an out of date, overweight set up?. What RPM's should we be seeing in the water?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

I think its time for a new Excel F4 with surface drive!

what about hooks in the hull?

You can also wear out a prop in no time on a hard-sandy bottom.

no hooks in the hull. Dented up some from the previous owner though. Prop is one year old and has a few small nicks but nothing out of the ordinary. Our river is mud and large gravel and we baby the prop. We have an add on prop guard that also helps from hitting things. At 7mph anything we do hit is not that hard...lol.

any little dings can hurt perfomance more than you think.

What speeds were you gettin with that load last year?

unfortunately I never put a gps on it until this morning but if I had to guess with the same load and same dents and dings around 15 mph. We are lucky to get it on plane and it is pushing a big wake behind. In the back we have one battery and a 6 gallon tank. We have both riders and dog on the bow to add front end weight. I've tried everything I can think of and nothing is helping. Is it normal to lose 1000 rpm from out of the water to in the water?

You rpm's would go up if you had considerable prop wear. I think you are having engine issues.

If your boat has flotation check and see if it has become waterlogged. You might have a leak and not even know it.

Checked compression today and both cylinders are hitting at 100 psi. Measured prop and it is at 9" x 6". Mudbuddy said it should be 9" x 7". Would the 1" make me lose 900 rpm under a load? Going to rip the floor out this weekend and see if the foam under the plywood is holding water.

Any other ideas/ thoughts?

less prop= higer rpm's

I bet your foam is waterlogged, or you may just have a heavy a$$ boat.
