Post Maximum recommended RPM for 27hp Kohler longtail
I have a 2008 Mud Buddy longtail that I bought used. I downloaded the owner's and the service manuals from the Kohler engine website but cannot find where it states what maximum RPM the governor should be set for. The tach is reading 4050 rpm when out of the water with no load (other than the bare prop) but I heard somewhere it should be set for about 3800. Anyone know the recommended value for this motor in this application? Thanks

Owners manual states 3750. I have mine at 4150 oow. It runs about 3700 with a 9x7. I just try to keep it under 3650. I have it set there just in case I need the extra throttle.

Thanks for the quick reply. While I wouldn't run it out of the water for more than a few seconds at max RPM- is it really going to blow up if I just leave it as is and it occasionally revs up to 4000 rpm when bumped out by a log or sandbar? With it in the water it is running 3600-3700 rpm so it is in the recommended range most of the time. Thanks again for any opinions.

4600 or so on the kohler. Stock spring pressure is good till around that point, actually probably a lil higher than that. Won't do you a whole lot of good to crank it up that high if you are only turning 36-3700 in the water though, but you can if you want to.

*edit* That is not Kohlers reccomendation. That is just about how high you can turn it before worrying about floating the valves.

I was unaware a Kohler could be turned up that high.
