Post subject:  Prop Manufacturers
Im looking for recommendations for prop manufacturers. Looking to put a new prop on a MB 35hp longtail. I have been looking at Tiger and BackwaterInc. Also considering Go Devil and Hopkins. I run a 1648 over shallow hard bottom and lots of veg.

They're getting good reviews, I second the backH20 (don't want to get censored) prop- I believe they are made by Ron Hill? I am presently running a 9x6 Hill prop with my 27 MB LT on a 1648, works fine, I sheared the last prop, a MB Tiger on some coral rock.

I have read several great reviews about the BackwaterInc props. I did read one review (I know, only one) that said that the prop seemed thin and didnt think it would last too long. Do those of you who run these props disagree with this?

Glades Ranger: We run the same areas. I have heard a lot of mixed reviews on the Ron Hill props and customer service. A lot of good but also a lot of bad.

I was also looking for a 10x6 prop which I dont think BackwaterInc makes, or Tiger for that matter. For a 10x6 I think Im left with Go Devil and Hopkins. I may have to settle for the 10x5 prop to go with BackwaterInc.

Unless you own a Go-Devil or know someone with a serial # and the same specs as your engine you wont be able to get a prop from them.

duck, how do you like running the the 35HP? My 27 gives me a good workout but I'm used to that. I'm waiting for the field report here on the MB SLT 35, hoping it is positive and that maybe they will produce a 27 reduction gear SLT. The Hill prop has been solid- very little wear. Are you ready for teal season?

You are right, making turns is not a strength of a longtail, it's better running straight lines. 10-4 on the thermocell. Apart from a few woodies, the glades is not much for teal season so I made plans for the Big O. It's always tricky up there- a deluge between now and the end of September could bring it up fast- but I think it will remain skinny meaning a lot of areas that were accessible before won't be unless you have a blowboat and even they get stuck. As I'm sure you've read or been told, to always wear your kill switch lanyard and make sure the swltch works. I started with a 1436/18 hp LT, then a 1544/25 hp LT, and now a 1648/27 hp LT, and I want to move up to an 1848/ 35 hp LT so I can comfortably carry and hunt three hunters and gear...the lake is massive, even after years there are many areas that I don't know, like the southern end around Ritta island or towards Belle Glade, or towards the nw marsh near Buckhead ridge. Thanks for the invite. Let us know how the prop thing plays out, finding the optimum planing depth, weight distributiion, and the obvious prop/motor combo, is always a trial and error thing.

I'm running 19-20mph by myself and dog with no gear, 16-17 with 3 guys and loaded with gear. I have a Tracker 1754, not a mud boat but works.

So true, Buzz! Sand/marl will eat up a prop in minutes of running time! Stay away from sand! We've plenty of sand here in Florida and coral rock so in the skinny both longtails and surface drives are compromised. When I started with GD, their props actually gained a little speed with some wear but when you lose too much edge and cup the opposite happens- call me Newton. :mrgreen: When I went to MB I found they were stouter, meaning they did not wear as much as the GD in similar situations (away from sand), but I wore one down when I ran in sand and another I sheared after hitting a coral rock. I bought the Hill prop (9x6) back in 2008 and I still have it, showing little wear, of course I've been careful, but it is good quality though I know many have not been pleased with this mfg. here and there. I welcome backh20's lower priced entries into the market!

I'f i'm not mistaken all the Backwater props are threaded props correct?

Duck is looking for one for a MB longtail, his shaft is hex head meaning its just a slip on prop with a washer and lock nut

Put a mudbuddy shaft in it, if the length and the OD are the same i don't see why it wouldn't fit, that would open you up to more choices

The shaft I have is a MudBuddy shaft. I have never thought of changing it over to the slide on style though. That is a good idea. I dont know that I have seen too many people do this. I dont know why this isnt more common. I hate the threaded prop.

Is there a reason that more people dont do this or why they wouldnt do this from the factory?

My guess would be the matching of shafts and measurments.
