its either 3/16 or1/4" ill measure it tonight. i just started digging around in the scrap pile at the local scrap yard till I found what i thought was enough. im gonna build the transom and motor mount out of the thicker stuff and the skeg and cav plate out of 1/8" |

Why is the mount on an angle? Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk 2 |

It's not on an angle it's just the way it's sitting on the table. If you look at the first set of pictures when the mount is on the boat transom the flat plate is level. |

Post subject: | Re: 13 horse honda gx390 build |
thanks!! everything on this build besides the prop and drive shaft was purchased at either Lowes, home depot, or a local bearing supply house. the seal housings are just 1-1/4' schedule 40 pipe. the main shaft housing is dom tube that is 1" id and 1-3/8" od. the ID of the 1-1/4" sch 40 is 1-3/8" so it slides right over the dom tube. then the seals are 1-3/8 od and 3/4 id so they sit nicely inside the housing. I haven't gotten to run it yet so ill keep you posted but no grease came out of the tube during the 10 or so min I ran it in the shop. |

sorry just realized you asked about the seal housing cap. I made it out of a 1-1/4" rigid EMT coupler. just cut it in half, welded a piece of plate on the end, drilled the hole for the shaft to go through and sanded it down. |

The engine was given to me. I have about 500 dollars in everything else. If you dont buy the shaft premade then you might could save a few more bucks. |

What size boat are you building this for? I'm building the same setup and having trouble deciding on what size boat I think it can push at a reasonable speed. |

How long is your shaft? ![]() |

Post subject: | Re: 13 horse honda gx390 build |
Shaft is 72". I would think anything over 15-16 foot 40-42" bottom would be a dog with something as small as a 13 horse. I'm putting this on a 15-42. |

What size prop are you using and what do you have in between the prop and the seal housing cap? Can you take a picture of the prop end up close with the prop installed? Thanks. Motor looks good. |

His driveshaft probably isn't pushed all the way up into the U joint in that picture. |

Post subject: | Re: 13 horse honda gx390 build |
^^^ frank is right. The driveshaft was loose for the earlier pictures. There's probly 3/16 to 1/4 inch between the jam nut and the cap. Prop is an 8x4 from backh2o. |

Also good to know that the motor is considered "fukable"... Definitely could be worse!!! |

Sorry for so many questions, just trying to get an idea of how I'm going to build mine. What is keeping the shaft from pushing into the u-joint? |
Author: | Baddodge [ Wed Sep 18, 2013 7:44 pm ] |
Post subject: | Re: 13 horse honda gx390 build |
The questions don't bother me I had lots.........short answer is nothing. The u-joint has two hardened set screws that are secured with lock tite so the shaft shouldn't go anywhere. The flange bearing at the top end has 2 set screws but those aren't designed to take any of the thrust load you are talking about. None of the commercial built designs that I'm aware of have anything that takes the thrust load from the prop. I'm sure some kind of special bearing with a thrust collar of sorts could be made to work but these things have been built the same for years with good results. heck the original go devils just had a bronze busing on each end with a couple of seals and I know of several of those things still running around. |

You can pretty much fuk anything if you put your mind to it. |
