Post Changing Prop Broken Shaft...
Has anyone on here ever broken a shaft where the prop threads are when changing props?

Post Re: Changing Prop Broken Shaft...
Just had one break on my 25hp GDLT had to buy a new prop ($225) and shaft to get it back going, I am going to have to get a machine shop to get the broken shaft out of my old prop.

Why on earth would they thread a shaft instead of spline it?

Actually, the shaft thrusts into the prop. If you hit anything you are jamming it on tighter.

Yeah, I know you supposed to hear a pop. But, you don't hear a pop until you pull it out the water or let off the gas. This is because the shaft then spins faster than the prop causing it to break loose. Go look at your motor, think about, and get back with me.

If you are putting your prop on and you push on the leading edge it is tightening your prop, correct? So what is the fukin difference if you hit an object with the leading edge?

Not wantin to disturb yall argument but...... the shaft has left handed threads and when I hit somethin with mine, it tightens the hell out of the prop. My prop dont (float) anymore.

Unless, Go-devil changed within the past 5 yrs. They are now right handed. Righty tighty, lefty losey. Took my prop off about a week ago and it's still right-handed just like the day I bought it. May be different rotation for the 27 but I know if you push on the leading edge on mine and the 16 it's tightening the prop.

I ain't gonna fight over dis chit. I know what mine does and don't really give a chit what the others do. I know mine tightens and if I hit something it makes it a b@#ch to get off. I also know it's right-handed just like every other bolt on every other piece of equipment I work on on a daily basis. Push on the leading edge of your prop and if it tightens it tightens if it doesn't, it doesn't. I really don't give a chit. No offense.

you could make yourself a prop tool with a nut, piece of pipe, and two pieces of flatbar. Put a socket and impact on it and it will come right off.

Damn that is a good idea... Sounds like you might have changed a few of these bad boys? So what do you think about the splines?

I have put them on with a marine taper and a key. Over time they also tighten up just like a morse taper and getting one off can also be very difficult.
