What would the optimum rpm's be for a 35 vanguard on a longtail, I have a "new" to me gd 1660 boat, only getting 2700-2800. thanks

2800 in neutral?

No, I was asking him if his neutral (or out of water) max rpms were only 2800, or if that was just a number from when he was running the boat.

We have no idea about trim position, load, or anything else that would affect rpm's under a load.

I know, I was just throwing that out there.

Adjust the governor to 4300 rpm at wide open throttle with the prop out of the water. Set idle rpms to 1200 with prop out of the water.

Those Rpm's were in the water, three men in boat or one man, didn't make a differance 2700-2800 is all it would turn. Haven't checked it out of water, but did think that this wasn't getting what it should.This is a go-devil longtail, no trim, no neutral, just fire it up and shove it in the water, then hold on. It did die on me a couple of times when I throttled down, a little hard to start. Haven't adjusted a governor, where do you find it on 35 vanguard. Not sure if I shouldn't just start checking the basics out like plugs, wires, carb, fuel.

Never had a 35 ( but want one!) but you should realize at least the 3600 in the water after tweaking to 4200-4300 out of the water as Owen said. My guess would be a worn prop or motor has lost compression? Let us know what gives?

Coco wants them running 3600 to 3700 RPM's in the water and about 4000 to 4100 out of water. Basically exactly what Briggs wants them running at

Checked out of water this a.m. ,,only getting 3200. Also checked both sides of exhaust to see if it was hot, maybe not running on one cylinder, both sides were hot. Doesn't act or sound like anything is wrong. Would it come from factory with rpm's set this low, idle rpms are about 950, my past experience says to keep those as low as possible when driving a longtail. I may need to find the governor screw, where is that hidden? Something is out of whack for sure cause this big mama is as easy to drive as my little 23 was

Its a screw in the linkage with a spring on it

Adjust it til you hit 4200-4300

Once you hit 4300, your idle may be way too high. If you can't get it to back down, come off the OOW rpms then zip tie your governor spring. You'll have low idle and full rpm to 4300

Or get a mikuni and be done with that lawn mower linkage system

Thanks, that was all it took, adjusted the governor screw and kaboom. running like a champ. This rig exceeds my expectations for performance with a longtail. Tested with about 750 pds of people and still gets up and scoots. The best part is this 35 is not much harder to drive than a 25 or 23 I previously owned. The right turn at low speeds will always be a hazard with the longtail though
