Need some advice on motor swap
Hey guys I need some help,my battery on my boat shorted out caught fire and burned the transom and my 16hp vanguard to a crisp,my godevil tail is fine I need a new ujoint and upper bearing, but other than that it looks good.
I was looking at the 22hp predator from harbor freight,it looks like it may bolt right up,im still rattled up over the whole thing and head is not clear atm,and just need a few pointers if I do the swap shaft height, bolt pattern, pto shaft size comparision.
No insurance on my old baby and out of pocket on this, any help or guidence much appreciated.

Re: Need some advice on motor swap
Do it! But buy the protection plan don't forget to use the 20% off coupon code. Google it. Those are what I use on my longtail builds. If you fuck em up with the protection plan. Harbor freight will send you a new one no questions asked. Follow breakin procedures.

Incredible motors for the money. It is an exact clone of the honda gx670 so the parts are interchangeable and easy to find

Thanks, thats not bad at all, my biggest concern is if the pto height is the same as the 16 vanguard

Re: Need some advice on motor swap
I'm not sure about that being it's a decent bit bigger than a 16hp. But if you want a similar motor the duromax 16hp is only like 300. But if the geometry works why not go with the 22hp ya know?

Re: Need some advice on motor swap
The shaft size is 1 inch still on the 670 predator sk that won't be an issue for you

Re: Need some advice on motor swap
Thanks jake and congrats I did some measuring,I and your right it looks like a direct bolt on. Weather here in sw arkansas has been crazy stormy and when I watched my dvr security camera looks like my crank battery thats about a year old internally conbusted,no smoke or warning just shot a flame out the side ignited my wire harness and went from there, all these years I used the bottom of a plastic 55 gal drum to cover my motor,I will not ever do that again. Damn thing was fully engulfed in less than 2 mins.

Re: Need some advice on motor swap
That sounds crazy. I have the exact same unit (16hp B&S) that I contemplated changing out with the predator until I finally got all the problems figured out. I will be very interested to see what differences you see.

Re: Need some advice on motor swap
Sorry about your motor and boat btw, that's rough. Hope you get her up and rebuilt soon. I'm going to arkansas later this week to pick up my boat, then I'm building the motor. Busy times in the hawk house

I swapped a Honda GX 630 for my old, tired B&S 16 no problem, pretty much a straight swap.

So the boat burned up and the only thing that survived is the GoDevil frame? I'll just put one in the win column for the GD vs BW debate. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Re: Need some advice on motor swap
Update:: got the predator 670cc installed on my 16 hp godevil frame,1436 light hull boat.
Easy change over everything was pretty much a direct bolt on fit and motor is a night and day performance upgrade with a lot less vibration, overall its a really decent motor for the price. I had to fiddle with the governer spring and adjust governer to keep it from fighting against itself on revs,i gained about 4/5 mph per gps on phone with wife in boat 22/24 mph with new stiffer gov spring it turns about 3900 revs in water it seems strong enuff to run that all day long.

Re: Need some advice on motor swap
How much did it cost you in parts to mount your new motor to your frame plus the new bearings
I am about to do this myself Im glad you put your neck out to do it first

Re: Need some advice on motor swap
Thanks guys, the motor and u joint bolted right on direct fit, go devil recommended a new flap plate for the 22 but I could have used my old one,the lower and upper seals, brass bushing and bearing and a new grease cup,and engine and yoke keys was right around 140.00 but I had extra cost due to replacing cup and flap plate I could have saved 80.00 just on those 2 items. If I didnt have to rebuild frame it would have been the cost of a couple engine and yoke keys and maybe new bolts to hold motor down.
One thing to note, the pto shaft on motor is about a 3/4in longer than the briggs,I didn't have to cut it to length but it fits close to u joint, didnt give me any probs tho press fitting it back on,runs fine atm any problems tho ill have to cut it down.
Hold my beer and watch this!
