 Hunt deck with longtail
Does anyone have a hunt deck with transom mount on it that runs a long tail? I never see pics of them except with sd's just curious if it is a better option than pods ???

 Re: Hunt deck with longtail
Look down the line at the Long Tail forum. There's one on there that put one on a Gator Trax and I think one other that put one on a Prodigy.

 Re: Hunt deck with longtail
I have a 1638 gator trax with a hunt deck and 24hp Honda longtail. I've had it for 3 years now and very happy with it. Main reason I went with it was a spot to hunt my dog and to stop any backwash. It also makes a nice spot to step into the boat.
Pods add actual buoyancy behind the weight of the motor which lifts the ass end of the boat up. A hunt deck is just built into the hull and doesn't add any buoyancy behind the weight of the motor. Pods allows the boat to float shallower and to put more weight in the back. A side effect is that you don't get the backwash anymore but that is also accomplished with my hunt deck. It seems like more people choose pods to allow a shorter/smaller jon boat to more safely run a mud motor. Another thing people question is if it has any effect on turning. I can say 100% that in my boat it doesn't. Maybe a wider boat would make you reach more to make a sharp turn but I still don't think than it would be any different than the same width boat without the hunt deck

 Re: Hunt deck with longtail
I have a 18x50 with hunt deck and I mounted a 24 longtail on it and LOVE it. If you can, put the mount on the inside of the transom plate. This will help you run even shallower because the weight will be more inside of boat. If you have any questions, pm me I can take pictures of mine for you. Good luck with your decision!
