Re: Custom longtail with jetski motor
Ok finally got back into this project last week, modified the cooling system and added some fins to the skeg to help keep it in the water similar to a cav plate, re-did the exhaust, moved the fuel tank up from and my inverter up front that runs my lights. Ran it in the pond thursday and the cooling systems seems to be keeping up just fine, its drives and turns so much better with that weight up front. small pond so don't really know how well the prop will stay down and under control till i have some more room to open it up. i hope to take it somewhere one evening this week or weekend and i'll post a video.

Re: Custom longtail with jetski motor
Put it back in the pond again today just to see if my latest changes helped. Only have about 100 yards to make a straight run and according to my phone gps got up to 22mph. Feels like its got a lot more to go. I don't know if it's just the nature of the torque curve with this prop or if the motor needs some work but it feels like it has no power till the upper 3/4 of it's rpm Range. I'll keep playing with it. It works ok now but I really want it to work great.

I like it , it's creative. , your definitely making some power . Getting it and the prop not to blow out just needs more tinkering. Anytime you see a longtail shooting a rooster tail when props submerged you've got some speed going. You might need a bigger boat one day. That looks like a beast to turn tight . Keep updating us.

Re: Custom longtail with jetski motor
Keep tinkering, like Jakehawk said, in Southeast Asia, they have some veritable beast river boats with longtail motors. GoDevil started the creative borrowing process, then came Beavertail, MudBuddy, Backwater, and all the rest. Would love to own the Harley powered-BT Predator. I'd like to see more boat designs specifically suited for LT's, not just heavy azz shortails. GD has some good ones but they can be improved upon. Saw a 65 HP LT up close here in Florida, the trouble was the right prop match.

Re: Custom longtail with jetski motor
Boy... that thing is just beginning to stretch it's legs at the end of the pond, you need more room Keep it up, you'll get it dialed in and it'll be screaming.

Re: Custom longtail with jetski motor
Just my 2cents, verify good compression then go to a smaller prop. The impeller that motor used to spin was only bout 4 inch diameter

Re: Custom longtail with jetski motor
as of now my goal it to have it run as fast as I am comfortable with driving that boat 30-35? and still have good drivability in the muck and swamp.. after all thats kinda what its supposed to do lol. and when I upgrade to a better hull still have good speed.

Re: Custom longtail with jetski motor
Put a 8x4 prop on it just to see how it would act. Takes off like a beast and tacs out pretty quick. (Not surprise). I guess I'll build a propper cav plate and try a 9x5 and see where that puts me. In theory I should be hitting 30 but we'll see.

Re: Custom longtail with jetski motor
GREAT NEWS!!!... there's no need to ditch your vanguards in search of a seadoo motor, it dont work very well. So today it ran the best it has yet, but despite it actually handling pretty well it has a few short comings that will be to complicated for me to justify trying to resolve. With the 9×5 prop it tacced out at 27 mph which felt pretty nice, not way too fast at least, with the motor obviously making plenty more power to keep going if it had the prop. Problem is it barely has enough low end power to get it moving without falling on it's face when you try to accelerate. Other problem is it's still overheating, and it vibrates like a bitch. So I'll lay this one down to rest and prolly put a vanguard on it SMH. I'll post today's video when i get a chance.

The safety lanyard kept vibrating off thats why i zip tied it. Yes that was water shooting in through the transom, but who cares as long as it goes fast right?! jk

Keep tinkering! You need a longer dragstrip!
